I've heard that doom 3 isn't going to have multiplayer at all. They decided to cut it out since they felt it was unnecessary to the game. This is both a good and a bad thing. It might prevent the engine from getting widespread acceptance as a game base, but it seems to indicate that they are very focused on making a rewarding single player game.
I want to see the spiked monster's return. One time I went through the game's graphics, extracted all of the spiked monster, and edited hanes briefs onto him. Those were the good days... I installed the Alien Doom once, then played it for days and days. God-mode on of course there are too many levels to not use it. My problem was that one day I played seven hours straight, without saving. When I reached some level area that resembled Carnagy Hall steps with many explosive barrels on them. I started to unload at the demons, or aliens in this case after the mod, with god-mode on mind you. Then oddly enough for no particlular reason death catched up with my cheat coding butt. After going through hundreds of levels, literally I mean hundreds, I died with god-mode on.
P.S. If they made this game anything like the original Doom, people would get bored really quick and use the cheat codes to reach the final challenge.
Doom 3 is going to be great, that is a given, but then its going to die. High system requerments and no multiplayer cant be good for long lasting pleasure, and even if there aer MOD's for it they would take so long to come out we would never play it. As far as I am concerned I am glad that DOOM 3 was delayed I already have to much to play anyway.

I think it may be a good thing that Doom 3's release date has been postponed, it'll allow more people more time upgrade their systems, so when it comes out, more people will feel keen about buying it. I know how I felt when Quake 2 came out and I had a 486DX/66Mhz, no chance in hell of running it. I'd much rather that id take their time and put the extra polish on this one instead of turning out a half-baked product like 'Final Doom' for those of you who remember.
It is sad that despite all the work that is going into Doom 3, that it's steep system requirements and lack of multiplayer could mean its downfall. Especially since Valve will soon be releasing HL2 to a strong and hungry HL community.
Actually, ID didn't make Final DOOM. Two completely different companies each did one of the two missions. Id simply published them both under one package. But yes, Final DOOM was stupid.
Actually, it might be better to delay the game than to try to compete with Half Life 2. They can continue to work on the game after Half Life 2 is released, and learn from it, to make Doom 3 better. There is a possibility that Doom 3 will be better than Half Life 2 (but I doubt it).

This is perhaps a smart move on the part of id. True, HL2 will have no competition during the quarter, but that is what id wants.
If Doom3 were released around the same time as HL2 their sales would be dilluted. It is hard enough to convince gamers to shell out $50 on a game when they have just paid $50 for a game 2 weeks earlier.
By moving the release date, Doom3 will not be released under the shadow of HL2. This will help increase their profits.

Now that I'm hearing that there's no multiplayer, I'm even MORE curious to get my hands on it. id pretty much gave birth to multiplayer gaming as we know it. For their new title NOT to have multiplayer, well... they must have figured that whatever else they wanted to do was REALLY important. Like interior structures of individual objects? Sweet jebus. It's going to make Half-Life 2's deformable objects (which, although cool, aren't really physically realistic, e.g. a watermelon splitting neatly in half when shot with a gun) look like HL1's splintering-and-fading-away crates.
I'm also not sure if I buy the claims that Doom 3 isn't going to have a good story. They're apparently doing lots of scripted events, which to me generally implies that they're putting big emphasis on story and atmosphere. Remember, HL2 is going to have a LOT of scripted events as well if it's anything like HL1 - you know the demo footage where you're in the lab and Alyx is talking to you? What, you think that's an AI having a dynamic conversation with you? Puh-leeze. Scripted events are good; they're what really propels a story forward and makes encounters truly memorable, because no AI can yet tell a story nearly as well as a human being.
I also do really think that Doom 3 is going to have a lot of the feel of the original Doom games. One of the clips from the E3 movie reminded me very starkly of my first time playing Doom 2. Gunfire in a darkened room, growls from the shadows, a sudden ball of flame coming from NOWHERE that I had to dive away from, the imp following behind it trying to tear my head off... sure, it was all hokey little sprites, but it scared the crap out of me because its lighting and sound was so far ahead of Wolfenstein 3D. And it looked like there's a lot of that same fast-paced action in this new game, while adding some of the creepy scripted events that made Half-Life 1 such an engrossing game. Remember the first time you saw a scientist get dragged screaming into a vent?. From what I've seen, Doom 3 is gonna have a lot of that sort of thing.
So in short, don't be a hater. I for one am sure that Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 will both be well worth the money I drop on them. and I'd rather the companies making them take their time and do it right than rush to have it out by a certain release date.
if John Carmack would stop being alittle geek and code the engine in something other than assembly language maybe it would be out by now.
hl2 is paving the way for higher level coding languages for pixel shaders and **** like that. jump on bored and help the script kiddies out to mod/level design
