<div class="IPBDescription">will ns be there</div> now ppl, i dunno if i'm the only 1 but when hl2 will ns be converted to be used wit its engine? if so could we expect new mdls like flamers and dismemberment. it would be nice if hl2 could use both ghoul and geo-mod tech but is that possible?

There are already many threads about this topic. The answer I saw there was NO. Imagine: Porting it to HL2 would mean redo EVERYTHING, models, code (most of it AT LEAST), maps (maybe)......

Ghoul and Geo-Mod are two separate engines. HL2 already has Source, which has a brother of the Karma engine built into the code. What sense would it make to retool HL2 at this late a stage to utilize, not one, but three separate engines? Do you realize how buggy that would be?

Flayra's said he may release the NS source to whoever has the balls to port it to HL2 (and if he feels said person can do it justice).

Why doesn't Flayra do it himself? I mean, its his mod. Wouldn't he be throwing it away if somebody else ported it over, got the "fame" for doing so, and then Flayra would be left in dark as his community moves on to HL2, leaving his HL version in the dark, which he did all by himself. But not the HL2 version, which some other specter will get the credit for, with perhaps a mention of Flayra in the credits for the source code.

<b>Porting</b> to HL2 wouldn't be such a colossal job. Making a game that takes advantage of the capabilites of the Source engine however would be a huge task.

    ---

And as Jaegar said - time is the problem. Hasn't Flayra already spent something like 2 years on NS?
  • PFCNublarPFCNublar Join Date: 2003-04-23 Member: 15792Members
What do you mean time? Flayra has all the time in the world, doesn't he? I mean like, its not Flayra just did NS for 2 years, and then suddenly drops it and moves on to another game, right?
    ...
In all, could you please elaborate on why Flayra wouldn't have the time? Its not like something life-changing happened to him, I think. Didn't get hit by a bus, train, fat person, robbed, jumped, maimed, driveby, is employed by a company, etc? I'm a bit in the dark about this...<!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> help.

Perhaps not time, but here are my cents:

    1) NS is not perfect on HL1, quitting it and redoing it for HL 2 would bring you 2 unfinished games for YEARS, while working on the HL1 version will give a better result.

    2) HL2 will require a bunch of good hardware,a nd as u see many NS players dont have it. Raising the requirements in such an insane big step would make you loose players, not to mention the ones who wont play it on HL2 because it will start again from an early state (Don't tell me : Just port everything you have now!; this would not make it useful to use the source engine at all cause you don't gain anything by using it.

    3) Imagine you worked on a game for 2 years. Then a new engine (HL2) comes out. You think: WTH? Why did no one cry for a portation to the UT2003 enginge or such, why do they want the HL2 engine? Then u think: I worked on NS HL1 for 2 years, switching engines means quitting this "old" version and restarting. So you think: WTH I STAY AT THE HL1 ENGINE!

Well, this is what I think.

What, seriously, will HL2 add to NS? Prettier graphics? They are fine as they are. Physics? However cool, these would NOT affect the gameplay in any serious way.
There is no need for a port, and even when HL2 is out, I will still be returning to old HL1 for a good game of NS.
    Sequels != Better for mods
Oh, and this is in the wrong forum.

For all I know Flayra <i>may</i> have all the time in the world. Whether he wants to spend a year or so remaking a project he's already spent a couple of years on is an entirely different kettle of fish.

Sing Goku, not sure if your just blind to the posts/articles, but its been said a good 30-40 times, HL 2 WILL RUN FINE ON ANY COMPUTER WITH TNT-2 OR ABOVE. AKA-you may just be able to run HL2 if you can run HL1. Just HELL of low quality.

... like how Tribes 2 was supposed to work on a PII 400mHz with a 16mb Voodoo 3.

You'll learn soon enough that the gaming industry's definition of "minimum requirements" really means "well... technically it's <i>running</i>, I guess..."

VALVe is working to keep Source as scalable as possible for low-end machines so they don't shaft their target market (read: CS players) completely, but don't hold your breath.

When half life 2 comes out I'm sure you'll have to upgrade your computer to play any other FPS that comes out for the PC that wants to even compete with HL2, like DOOM. I really hope it gets ported over, and dont say no, he could do it if he wants...which I really hope he does.

EDIT: Prettier graphics, yay! Really, these grapics are sweet. The physics rock, and those would be the two main reasons to port it over for me. Just the update on quality would rock. Its not like you need to get a new car from the one you baught in 1967, but having a new one would be nice...it would probably run better too.

May I just LMFAO? Minimum reqs? Well I want to see you playing HL2 on such a PC. It will run fine. With all the detail down, polycount down blablablabla.... Which DX effects does the TNT2 support? Hm? Then there would not be any reason for going to HL2, if not for the technical site, cause gameplay is fine as it is now.
