Ms Java Vm/reformatting

<div class="IPBDescription">changing block size</div> Right lets start at the beginning, I got my new 115 gig hard drive installed and formatted (using the xp setup to format it with ntfs), however it was running a little slowly, and after chatting to a few people I realised that my block/cluster size has been set to 512 bytes. Anyway I put up with a slow system as I don't care too much about load or install speeds, had everything working fine, until i tried to install visual studio 6, it forced an install of the microsoft java virtual machine, at which point both cheating death and steam stopped working, steam fails in a number of ways I don't want to go into now, and cheating death causes an error with half life whenever it runs at the same time as half life. Does anyone have a solution to this?

Anyway I've decided to reformat, easier than trying to solve the problems, and I thought it would be a good idea to change my block size, I've only got the windows xp install disk for formatting a drive as NTFS, how do I set it to a 4kb block size, or is there another program which will do this for me (I'm a student and therefore it needs to be either free or very very cheap)?

If your seriously bent on NTFS, try <a href='http://www.ntfs.com/ntfs_optimization.htm' target='_blank'>http://www.ntfs.com/ntfs_optimization.htm</a> I still use FAT32 on my xp pro install because it dosen't contain the letters "NT" <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> Whatever floats your boat. That should help. Shows proper cluster sizes too depeding on drive size.

thanx, but i've already seen that page, doesnt tell me much about actually changing the block size. on the note of using fat32, ntfs is far better, especially on big drives, just look at the stats on that website.

Anyway thanx for replying, guess im just going to try a reformat, see what happens.

XP should setup blocksize and everything for "optimal settings per your hardware" I honestly have never needed to change block size, hence my trouble in trying to help. NTFS really that much better? TIME TO CONVERT!!!!111eleventy2
