A Little Insight On The 2.0 "early Release"

maybe insight isn't the right word
I'm gonna set it out right now.
I think this is a fileplanet deal that the NS team has been offered. Flay mentions that Desert Combat did a similar thing and their fanbase was greatly increased. Anyone remember that "best mod" poll on fileplanet that Desert Combat killed NS in? DC got a lot of votes.

Flayra (et al) have a pretty tough decision to make here. Its the age old "selling out" dilemma, whereby they can greatly increase their audience (good), at the (possible) cost of respect from their current audience (bad). I for one voted "Yes, anything for the devs", because I think a move like this could bring good things for Natural Selection. Yes I am aware that more people = more idiots, but thats the price of fame. If Flayra is even considering this offer, than I'm sure he knows that equation and is ready to accept it. The fact that Flayra even put it to a poll to see how we feel is such a classy move, how could I have voted otherwise?

If all my assumptions are correct (early release = fileplanet), and Flayra goes through with it, I wont be going anywhere (but I don't envy the forum admins and the irc ops ). Maus got a quick post in that thread guessing that the release would be to Constellation members, which I don't believe fits the description Flayra posted, but possibly provides a way for Flayra to cushion the blow to his existing fans. We want 2.0 early too, but those that have already paid for Constellation aren't going to be too happy about paying again. Why not release it to Constellation members also, as a peace offering to your existing fans? Hopefully that would be acceptable within the agreement offered by the outside party.

Good luck to the NS team, whatever their choice is!

It should go to forumers who registered the summer before NS 1.0's release...

/me looks over at my reg date

Seriously, it should go to constellation. It will increase the members of that, as well as the number of community members.

More Money = More Flayra time = More NS. Judging by his interviews, he wants to do a LOT with the NS idea :-)

I'm hoping for a MMORTS, alluded to by Flay in a recent interview.

You may not have been around for that, but I still remember what really happened. All the DC guys on their forums (while making a forum invasion here to flame us for being a legitimate first place) agreed to delete cookies and change hostmaks all day, a couple even set up bots, just so they could vote for the mod over and over and over again...

That's why automated polls are always stupid, cause some dorks with nothing better to do are going to rig it in their favor...

For the game I think its best.

For the community, it might fragment some long terms, but not everyone can be happy.

I think Natural Selection will be better off with the exposure and the introduction to a wider commnuity. I would also like to see the devs alittle more financially compensated. After all its a great game, why shouldnt they profit from it?

I wont be part of any early beta. But i dont mind waiting.

    Cheers

I was around for it, but I hadn't heard that it got rigged and I didn't care enough to look into it. I always thought polls like that would be ip specific or something. Well that just proves my long standing theory: Only jerks use the internet.

Personally I would rather that the NS team decide to go on a more.... creative... "marketing" campaign rather than early releasing to a specific playerbase. I'm not against them profiting, but it seems to me like its an easy way out, and, as stated, there will probably be quite a few aggrivated people about it. My guess is even if he did do a limited release it would get leaked within 5 minutes after the estimated download time for whatever the fastest line is.

thats why constellation members would make an obvious target, because flay already has thair wonids... fileplanet would be too much work for 3 or so days...

The thing about release parties is who you know.

I managed to get DoD V1.0 links about 12 hours before 99% of the community did. How? Well I've known quite a few of the dev team for a very long time, so I get looked after with stuff like this.

On top of the 'select few' who get it early, there will be a small contingent of idiots that will undoubtedly find the one or two links that have been posted without much fanfar, that link will make it's way around to their friends, and then some idiot comes in and spams the link before the actual release (By a good few hours), dev team gets ticked off, the official release time comes, and the circle of life is complete.

    I love release parties.

Oh well, for some reason the idea of a "semi-open" beta ticks me off a little, though not to the point that I would "leave the community forever". The problem is that we've waited and waited and waited for 2.0, so it would somehow hurt that some people get to play the finished product sooner. It just doesn't feel right in my sense of equality. I can see that vets and pts get to play the game earlier, put those are not positions that money can buy. I'm fine with paying customers getting to skip the lines on Fileplanet, but it somehow disturbs me that they get preferential treatment to exclusive files and demos too. I'm also somewhat fine with Constellation members getting preferrential treatment, after all they paid to support NS.
This is quite much of a "gut feeling" question, and this is what my gut tells me. I don't buy it that this results in a better product technically, at best it generates more PR. CS made it to fame without much commercial assistance (the commercial offers kicked in after CS had become a success), and so could NS. Oh well. The matter seems to be decided (and so is the poll). It hurts a little, but as my vote says, I will get over it. Whether I can get over my bitterness at all the newcomers that are playing 2.0 before me and are spamming the forums with inane questions (YES, an instance of old-fashioned ENVY) is another case. I'll try.

The problem with a semi-open beta is that it will undoubtedly get leaked.

So it may as well just be a release to begin with....

Why not release it to forum members in numerical order than alphabetical ?
ooo seeing how many people don't start with 1 or 2 in their names, guess i'll get it early. They should release it in October 31st for the anniversery of NS * That'll annoy you all *

Personally, if it was released to fileplanet or gamespy to an early release, i would lose a lot of respect for the NS dev team. would i carry on playing NS? Of course i would, i'm a junkie. But i've long since had a vendetta against the *bad words* who run gamespy and it's affiliated companies (and i know quite a few people with the same ideas and motives as me).

I don't think i'd be willing (or able) to pay to play when i can wait 2-3 more days and play for free anyway. Sure i love the mod, but it's the same as DOD retail, why go out and buy it when i can download the same thing for free?

Anyway, it would get leaked. There's no way around it, it would get leaked. Unless it was released to the Constellation members, but then, i'm only taking that side because i am in the constellation program myself.

But..... my conscience is drawn into it. It would make NS more popular, therefore increasing the popularity of the Dev team and ultimatly make them richer, and give them a better budget to make a better game. If it would help the Dev team.... I have to say go for it.
