Demo Recording Tips?

Sluggy/laggish demo playback
I just recorded my first full length NS demo.. and when I watch it, boy is it laggy. You can basically only tell I'm jumping because of the sound it makes, it's really hard to tell by just looking at the screen. Any way to fix this? Any way to make it as (or nearly as) smooth as the actual gameplay? Is this a recording problem or a playback problem? Is this normal? The HUD isn't showing up either. Besides my weapon, you can only see the res count, the comm name, and the health/armor.

I don't really know that much about the missing frames, but I do know that a lot of the ingame sprites don't show up in demo's.

this maybe a one off type thing, theres quite a few bugs associated with hldemos, i suggest trying another demo
im assuming you werent really lagging in game or having much packet loss ? because that would effect your demo

Hmm... try increasing your "rate" before you take the demo.

Though I don't know where the exact post is, I believe MonsE said there is a problem recording demos in NS when running over 60FPS. I know other mods dont have this problem, but apparently NS does. Try recording a sample demo at less than 60FPS and let us know if it still happens.

72 FPS . Just set your max to 72 ingame and it will look less jumpy.

And yes, other mods have the same issue (it's engine, not mod).

As someone who does a lot of movie work, I might suggest ditching HL demo recording and move up to http://www.fraps.com . NS does not allow you to record some portions of action correctly right now, and probably will continue until a post 2.0 patch. Using FRAPS means you can make some decent (and portable!) AVI's, edit them, add titles and effects, share with friends, loved ones, etc. The latest version is $30 (I bought it the moment I noticed), but the previous 1.99 and earlier versions are freeware.
