i recently want to start to run my own server but as i have my home network some way, i was told i would have to port forward or setup my network a different way. How is it possible to give my other machine(which isnt connected directly to the modem)a valid ip so that other players can join ?

Need more info. Are you running your network through a router or having a machine on your network act as a gateway? Each configuration has it's method for port forwarding.

I posted a great how to guide for making a dedicated server from a lan!!! If I find it again I will bumb it back up for those that are to lazy to search for it.

    Do this:
Under the Server and Server Operators forum section scroll down to the bottom of the screen!

There Type in "newbies guide" (without the quotes) where it says search this forums. Hit enter!

It will return 1 result! This is my post on how to do this stuff.

    It's not very hard.
