Find Me A Good Mp3 Player!

<div class="IPBDescription">I wanna listen to muzak on the road.</div> So I'm partial to the iPod (the smallest iPod would be more than enough storage for me), its got size and excellent control. Other thing I'm looking into is MiniDisc (obviously the type that can play mp3 compressed files). My criteria are price (iPod i'm looking at your expensive butt), durability (MiniDisc i've heard concerns over), size (i hate my 64meg compactFlash player), and control (I imagine iPod dominates this category).

Go forth my pretties and decide what I should dump hundreds of dollars into!

    I'd just say the cheapest iPod you can get. I'm biased though, because the iPod was my first true love.

    Oh yeah, also links to vendors selling said cheap iPods would be nice (prices in canadian dollars even nicer!)

    I just got this... 20 Gigs

    <a href='http://www.americas.creative.com/products/product.asp?product=732&category=2&maincategory=2&nav=over' target='_blank'>http://www.americas.creative.com/products/...gory=2&nav=over</a>

    They make a 60 gig one too. You get more memory for the $ too compaired the the iPod.

    I can put all 10.7 gigs of MP3s on there and still have TONS of space for whatever else I want.

    It would have cost me $300 for the 20 gig one (cheaper then the 20 gig iPod) but I got a $100 off savings thing through my dads company so even better. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Thats pretty cool, although 20 Gigs is so much more than I'll ever need. For pricing sake, I don't need anything more than 10 Gigs, 5 Gigs would be cool if its cheap.

    Ok, you can get a Mini-Disc player for about 50$ now, @ Sony Plaza.

    You can get a few MD's for like 20$ more, with around 4-5 gigs of storage.

    lol yea I gpt 2 of those too (dont ask me why I just like technology), They are nice. If you use LP4 recording level you can get about 64 songs on each disc. LP4 is the worst u can record on and its still very very good quality.

    The new ones let you record 30x faster from your PC or whatever. Its like drag and drop.

    Mini Disc owns MP3 players. At least that's what I think. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    They're cheaper, more versatile, more practicall, more reliable and they look cool too. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Really.... and no one has ever had any durability problems with their minidisc players? I've heard stories that they break very easily, although I'm not sure I believe them.

    I have three minidisc players here. One of them fell on the ground (concrete floor outside) and nothing happened. No problems with it whatsoever. Oh, all are Sony ones. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Well this minidisc thing looks like the way to go, can I get suggestions on specific models? RPG_Jssmfulhud you said you've had 3 of them, which was the best for you?
    Heres a link to a local store, the prices arent the best, but I think they do price matching and have great support and no questions asked return policy. Are any of these models good?
    <a href='http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/class.asp?logon=&langid=EN&dept=19&WLBS=fs%2Dweb4&catid=7678' target='_blank'>http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/class.asp...web4&catid=7678</a>

    Keep in mind, that if I've got 320mins of music on one disc, I'm gonna want to be able to navigate that large list easily. Some of these models look like they have small display screens.

    I have a MZ-R501 as the latest... I'm really satisfied with it. It provided playback for 4 weeks (2 hours of playback every day) with only one AA battery. I mean, I couldn't believe it...

    The recording feature is easy and practicall. They even provide you with a USB line in/out cable (named PCLink). You have the normal recording, long and extra long recording (the quality is, of course, great).

    I have a minidisc walkman (without the recording feature) and the oldest (and the most expensive/quality proof) MD player/recorder. But I am very satisfied with MZ-R501.

    If you'd like to really record with awesome quality, go buy an MD component. But I know you're not going for that. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I'm under the impression that these things play .mp3 files, am I incorrect? I always thought that with new players I could drag my .mp3 files onto the player and it knows how to play them. Is this possible?

    Save yourself about 200 dollars and just buy a MP3 CD player. I recommend the Rio Volt. I have an older model of it, and it works perfectly, I havent gotten it to skip yet (I've rode on a school bus and VIOLENTLY shook it around, to the point where everyone was staring at me, and it failed to skip.) Its got nice equalizer settings, and the newer models as I understand have a built in radio. You're gonna want a decent pair of headphones though because the ones provided BLOW.

    Interesting suggestion, unfortunately I don't have a burner in this comp (but I do have easy access to one). Thing about those mp3 cd players is that they're kind've big. I'll look into that, thanks.

    Shaggy... I still think you should go with a minidisc player. A bit of additional info:

    - Minidisc players can record/play ANYTHING. From mp3s to normal audio or record from radio...
    - You can <i>NOT</i> drag and drop files. You have to record the discs in real time...
    - With a optical line, you can start a cd and let the minidisc record it, it will create the tracks on its own.
    - The shock protection is awesome. Shake it to the limit and no skipping.
    - You can store/move/delete/combine/rename tracks.
    - Alas, only a small LCD display is included. But you won't have 200 tracks on a disc anyway...

    You can

    But you need a Net MD and the bundled software, and a USB port.

    I got the old Archos Jukebox mp3 player, 20 gb, about 350 euros, I can put anything on it. I can put any files on it and just take em off on another comp. It rules, but yeah if you need a smaller one I'd take the iPod <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Yes, I was talking about the MZ-R501... <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Yeah, I've been chatting with a friend whos been using MD for like 5-6 years (and he hates it now, go figure. but he did stop before netMD came around). Bottom line is that I'll probably head out and grab a netMD recorder today. I'm looking into the sport version cause I hear any other MD player is pretty delicate, but the sport might be too big/missing too many features, we'll see. Thanks for the help everyone! I'll post again when I've bought something.
  • RPG_JssmfulhudRPG_Jssmfulhud Join Date: 2002-11-02 Member: 4006Members
    Too delicate? I disagree. Why do you think they're called <i>walk</i>mans? <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I take my minidisc players always with me, whether they're in my pocket, lying somewhere or anything, nothing bad happens. The only thing would be, not to bang on them with a hammer or dip them in water. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
