To elaborate slightly you can play NS with the retail version of Counter-Strike and with the retail version of Day of Defeat. If you encouter an error while installing NS with either of these products this thread should help you solve your problems.
This is how i did it and it is the easiest way: Install it but do not install it into that folder that it makes for you, you browse in your Cdrive for this Sierra/Counterstrike/(install it into here) you will see a folder called cstrike dont put it in there install it to the same area where that is, THEN do NOT use the desktop shortcut to find games because ns wont show up in fiolter or selected games. Use your counterstrike shortcut to use it, then your good to go
Never mind... My mind was too fuzzy... Heh
To create a working short cut to ns create a short cut to hl.exe and use the parameters -game ns -console in the target under properties and possibly -nojoy if you don't use a joystick and want to save a small amount of RAM and -32bpp if you want to use 32 bits per pixel instead of 16 bits per pixel(makes all kinds of gas and translucent sprite type effects look much nicer at some slight cost to the graphics card). You can find one (or more? can't remember) nice looking ns icon(s) in the ns folder which you can use by clicking properties for the short cut and then change icon. Any .ico file of your choice can be used as an icon for any short cut.
adding "gl_texturemode gl_linear_mipmap_linear" to a (possibly previously existing but I don't think so) autoexec.cfg file in the ns folder (make it with notepad and rename) will quite drastically improve image quality(textures at some distance away will be much less fuzzy) at a very low performance cost. You might wan't to add "fps_max (whatever your refresh rate is)" into the autoexec.cfg(why do this with a autoexec.cfg file? then the game can't do anything funny like reset gl_texturemode to gl_linear_mipmap_nearest whenever you restart it...). Once you have setled on a key configuration it is allways a good idea to write protect it so no admins or server plugins can change it permanently(they may change it but it will be back to normal when you restart).
There are many more little tips and tricks you could do but since you didn't exactly ask for them maybe I should stop ranting now?
