IGCSE First Language English Coursework Assignment (Factual)
Many people think that video games are only for recreation. People believe that it is very simple to produce a game and that it is an unproblematic way to gain money. This idea is caused by the great level of cynicism concerning several people, who do not appreciate the idea of video games. What people cannot comprehend is that to develop a video game you require patience, dexterity and employees with a range of different skills. In addition, to promote a video game to the public you need to create expositions, T.V commercials and previews on the Internet and in magazines.
When people think about creating a video game, they generally assume that all you need is a computer nerd and a microprocessor. What they do not understand is the complexity on creating one simple game, for example, Tetris. For a company, like Nintendo, to produce a game you need several personnel to take care of all areas of the company. A financial director is needed, once the company needs to have an income of capital, so some profit can be attained. Marketing management is required, since they exhibit to the public the product, promoting the product. Fabrication of the game is needed, consequently, factories must be set up so that it can be manufactured. To generate a game you need programmers, to certify that the characters of the game perform the right movements. What people believe is that only applying the mathematical codes to the game is necessary. What they do not realize is that the programmers only give direction, the art designers make the creation, and in this category you have several other sections. Some of these categories include individuals to create the textures of the backgrounds and objects, different dimensional backgrounds and the shapes of the characters. Additionally, you have sound designers, who are responsible for the music and the sound effects. Another area of the industry include people who are called Betta Testers, who are in charge of the analysis of the game before going out to public, where they must test for any faults or mistakes that the programmers made.
The flow of the wealth in the video game industry is immense. A game requires a small amount of wealth, compared to other industries. The income, in contrast to the money involved in the production, is immense. A fine example is of a company called SquareSoft. Back in the 1980s, they were just trying to create a reputation, but all their efforts were in vain. As the company was almost bankrupt, as a result of their minute income, they decided to invest every single penny into a single game, since the amount of money owned was too little for another game. This game was their final fantasy, hence, it was called Final Fantasy, which reveal to the world a completely new engine. It had revolutionary graphics, excellent control and a magnificent storyline. It was a huge success with the public, making the company rise to be one of the elite groups in the video game business. This game, Final Fantasy, illustrates how much money a game can produce, being that one day, this single game was able to remove SquareSoft from total bankruptcy, reaching the top of the industry. If a game is a triumph, it produces millions of dollars, if it is a failure, it will make a maximum of fifty thousand dollars. Another reason for why this industry is so wealthy is because of its size. Very few companies exist, and to gain huge incomes you need to be in the top 5. They are Nintendo, Sony Computer Entertainment, EA Games, Capcom and Konami, as well as all of them being synonyms for video games, especially Nintendo. This shows how exclusive games are. Huge amounts of money are in the hands of a minority. To show this, there are very few famous names in the industry. The three most famous are Shigeru Miyamoto, the person that gave Nintendo its reputation. Hideo Kojima, the main producer of Konami. Hironobu Sakaguchi, the person that saved SquareSoft from bankruptcy.
The promotion of the merchandise is a crucial factor and, consequently, there are several exhibitions about the game industry. In it you find all kinds of people, from game fanatics, to company directors, trying to see what their opponents have created. One of the biggest game expositions is called E3, which is in the USA. The latest technologies of the industry are revealed in these places. Game fans can play the latest games, see the new consoles, and many other objects relating to games. Video game programmers can look for new programs to help create the games, look for new game engines and see what their competitors are up to. Furthermore, the companies use television advertisements to display to the rest of the world the new games, for people that cannot go to Japan or the USA for the fairs. They also use the Internet and video game magazines to present it to the public.
The popularity of the video game is because of its entertaining issue. When you play a game, you are transported to a world completely different from ours, where you are God and can chose your own decisions, without worrying about killing someone or falling from a cliff. You can feel the adrenalin when you are a pilot, flying to destroy your enemy base, or even feel the suspense when you are entering an enemy base as an under cover agent. It may seem idiotic that a person keeps on constantly pressing buttons, but the effect of the button pressing is what it is gratifying.

It also seems to fly off to a different point in the last part of it. The transition from the promotion to why playing games is good doesnt seem very nice. I'd suggest putting that last parapgrah on top, and then connecting it to the text.

But, still, this is a very good piece of writing.
P.S: Yeah, the paragraphs dont seem to work :O. Pressing tab does nothing, and putting a space has no effect either.
Overall this work is fairly good, but there are some nooks and crannys here and there that could be tweaked to make the whole "essay" more interesting and plain ol' better, or if you want, *excellent*.
Back in Grade 9 my teacher had us do an arguementive essay on any subject with a minimum of 1000 words and guess what mua decided to contemplate in his essay? The existence of Atlantis. My teacher said I was argueing something that was not going to be easy..Duh! Anyways, my mind said do it, so I did, and got a 90 percent. Most of the essay was written during the night before it was due and it ended up to be around 6,000 words.
Well don't take my advice that seriously, I am only in grade 11 afterall..
I wrote that when I was in 10th grade (November 2002, to be more precise).
And not being argued thoroughly, and based more on fact is presisely what I wanted (hence, the title "Factual"). On my first draft, there was a lot of facts, and a lot of details, being a 3 paged essay. But my teacher told me it could be 1 1/2 pages, max. So, instead of removing the details, I removed the fact (well, OK, and some more details).
I would post my first draft, put I kinda deleted it. hehehe.
