Do you mean services or processes? Without a list of your current processes, I can't help you. As far as services (and tweaking in general), take a look at the readyroom.org <a href='http://www.readyroom.org/perfgde_1.html' target='_blank'>Windows XP/2000 Tuning Guide</a> .

Tell us more about what proc's you have running right now and we can cover that aspect as well...

And click on startup tips, most comprehensive list of "stuff that runs on your computer that you don't really know wth it is" on the web.

OMG why??? Nearly every single file you have running has a much more complete description in its version property sheet... This guy's whole site seems to have been so much work for so little gain...

Oh well, that's borderline OT. If you want to tell us your running proc's we can help.

so yah, cntrl-alt-del --> Task Mangager --> Processes

run us off the list of things and well will possibly go through it (if you can just make it so all the processes are showing then take a scrn shot and post it up)

quick one on how to take a screenie:
    1) hit cntrl print screen
    2) open a paint program (ms paint, photo shop what ever)
    3) paste (cntrl V)
    4) select the area you want to save (in this case the taskmanager)
    5) copy that
    6) open a new blank canvas and paste again
    7) save and post

RCli9ck on "My Computer" --> Properties and then it is on the bottom right there <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

It might be because of my terrible connection - i have a dailup to a university 20 miles away.

see? - it says this (a simple copy paste job)

also what is the name of the file (you might have to convert it to another format, try jpg I think bmp don't work)

Here it is then - i set the resolution way down and made it black and white
  • CaimanCaiman Join Date: 2003-06-01 Member: 16900Members
As for system information - after you get to the properties of my comp do you just want the "General" info? Because that is just a bunch of numbers and things. Also, how would i find out what video and sound card (if any) that i have.

One last question - how come people can post these huge screenies that are bigger than my monitor but my jpg image of the task manager takes up 112620 bytes - just a few kilobytes shorter than the limit?

    Because we use h4x.

Auctually we use a program to compress the images (I use ACDSee).

You don't know what video or sound card you have? Are you ok?

You can also do Start > Run "dxdiag" (if it's the same in Windows 2000, I don't know) It will give you a run-off of your specs, click the "Display" tab for information regarding your video card (whatever it may be). The "Sound" tab does the same with your sound card.

    Hope this helps, good luck. <!--emo&::marine::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/marine.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='marine.gif'><!--endemo-->

I'd say just run down the list and "end process" everything but explorer.exe. Anything that your system really needs will refuse to terminate. Everything else is nonessential.

    That's the rule I go by, anyway. So far it hasn't let me down. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    ...

    svchost

    that aint good

I had a problem recently where alot of copies of that program would spawn, the fact that you have 2 of them sorta worries me. But if you havn't gotten that problem you probably don't have to worry

Waiit a minute - should I actually listen to Samwise?

Also Samwise - start up NS - then u can end explorer.exe too.
  • 2of12B0RG2of12B0RG Join Date: 2002-12-21 Member: 11285Members
Samwise is correct, although if you see certain programs running that you want to remain running don't end them. Don't quit explorer.exe or it will get rid of windows and some other nasty things.

Or instead of doing it Samwise's crazy way (sheesh), you could find out what each of processes does and make a determination and what is silly crap and what is running due to the OS making it run. Just killing processes won't necessarily do anything, as they will respawn the next time you boot up, unles you find out the source - in registry run or in a startup folder or as a service or as a scheduled AT job.

sVchost is a bunch of windows components

    sCchost is a trojan

svchost does some stuff... most of the stuff that you can disable is related to it..
I popped open the property sheet for it, this was its description:
"Generic Host Process for Win32 Services"
All the extra junk that windows runs for you
  • ThansalThansal The New Scum Join Date: 2002-08-22 Member: 1215Members, Constellation
no, it was being spawned by a virus I believe (I disabled it by renaming both instances of cmd.exe <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->)
