<div class="IPBDescription">and what they're saying</div> I made a small list of what the german guy is saying in Day of Defeat, and I was wondering if anyone wants to add to my list (if you're wondering why I'm not in the day of defeat forum, 1 this is off-topic, 2 they require a non-free e-mail account...and i don't use outlook express.
Time for UltimaGecko's English->German and literal german translations!
Go! Go! Go! - Los! Los! Los! (Los means loose, but it is an idiom for go or hurry, and it sounds better than Beeilt euch)
Displace! - not sure if it's Stellung versetzen (stellung is place, versetzen is to shift) or Stellung Verschleppen (Verschleppen is to displace)
Prepare for assualt (it used to be there) - Fertig macht fuer Sturmangriff (fertigmachen is to prepare/make ready, fuer is for, Sturmangriff is an assualt)
Squad, covering fire! - Gibt mir Feuerschutz - Give to me fire protection (anyone that knows little german, you use mir instead of mich because it's to you, case you're wondering...makes it dative)
Fire in the Hole (hooray for American idioms) - Achtung! werfe Granate. - Attention (warning)! Throwing grenade (it's werfe so you know it's 'I' throwing it.
Grenade! - Grenate! - yea....it means grenade...
Sniper! - Scharfschuetze! - sharpshooter/sniper
Negative - Geht nicht - doesn't go (gehen is to go)
Hold this posistion - Halte diese Stellung - Hold this place (halten is to hold, an idiom for stop (Halt! the command)
Enemy ahead! - Fiend Geraus - enemy ahead..got me with the geraus...maybe it's my speakers but I think it should be voraus or vorn or something
Point captured - Ich habe es eingenommen - I have captured it (einnehmen - to capture)
I need backup - Ich brauche Verstaerkung - I need reinforcement
Enemy behind us - Sie sind hinter uns - they are behind us
Fall Back! - Sofort zueruck ziehen! - Immediately pull back (ziehen is to pull, sofort is immediately)
Move out! - Maenner gehen ans - Charge men!
Basic military words someone might want to know for german:
Sturm - assualt
Gewehr - rifle
Waffen - Weapon (Luftwaffe - Air weapon)
Pistole - yea...guess
Blut - blood
Grab - grave, ditch
Schwert - sword
Panzer - tank
Krieg - war
Basic directions:
rechts - right
links - left
geradeaus - straight
zurueck - back
vorwaerts - forwards
rueckwaerts - backwards
I did have a site with english to german military ranks, but it's not on this computer. I think the GDF clan has it on there website too.
Fell free to add to the list, I have no Idea what the guy is saying for Area Clear (an Area is Gebiet, though) and use the Panzerschreck (besides Panzerschreck..heh) My speakers suck...a lot. Hope this helps someone out ...for some reason, heh.

I remember the DoD team made a mistake in 3.1 . If you were German, at the start of a game it would say 'Prepare for Sturmangriff' lol. A mixture of both languages.

BTW, I'd translate 'Blitzkrieg' with 'Flashstrike'. It described the airwar against GB, trying to wear the country Hitler hoped he could ally with down into submission. Maybe he should've taken one or another psychology lesson.

And I agree with whoever it was who said that they should have paid (at least, if not more) this kind of attention to the language when they made RtCW (with subtitles), instead of having all the guards talk in heavily accented English.

It's probably just the same. A lot of English is taken from German. For example, Kirche. It's German for church. Another name for a church is a kirk.
Two words you may be familar with: fuieken and schiesse. Fuieken is German 'to strike' but it's the F-word in English. 'Schiesse' is the S-Word, it has the same meaning in German.
Blitzkreig tactics involved lots of armour punching through enemy lines and essentially not stopping. It caused problems with supply (because you we're advancing so fast) but was very effective.

Ficken would be the same german form of the english form.
My definitions were pretty close for going through tons of staticy speakers. I always wanted to know what that 'area clear' was ....fiendfrei never accured to me...it sounded like Gebiet freiwahl to me...which makes no sense. I think it's 'gibt mir though, not gebt...geben is a messed up verb.
I never thought Displace would be Stellung Wechsel...it always sounds like it ends in an n sound to me...like Wechsen or Vexen. Sorta like Versetzen.

Blitzkreig is literally Lightning War and wasn't actually coined by the army, just the propaganda people later. It refered to the simoutaneous use of air power and land power in the sweep of Poland. If anyone wants a cool website about weapon...in german, check out www.waffenHQ.com . Lots of weapon listings from different periods.
Not sure if there's anymore prudent german information I can provide. I'm not overly fluent in it.

It's definitely NOT "gibt mir", that imperative doesn't exist. It could be "gib mir" (singular), but all the other commands are plural talking to the whole squad, so why should this be an exception.

He said "fuer" which is german for "for" so it was correct.
And "Feuer" is fire so dont get them confused.
