Some Connection Problems

<div class="IPBDescription">too damn slow</div> OK, well, I really dunno if this belongs here or to the tech area, but I'll post it here anyways.

I'm kinda new to on-line games, although I have been playing NS for about a month now (it's my first on-line game <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->), and I started noticing some things.
When I play on LAN games, my stats are quite good, with few deaths and high kills. But when I play on-line, I have something like 2 kills and 20 deaths. Now, I started thinking that or the guys I play when i'm in a LAN house really stinks, or I have a really slow connection. I chose point 2, but, as I said before, I really dunno if this is the thing cause I'm new to on-line games.
I have this 33kbps connection, but soon I'll have a faster connection (hopefully).

Could someone please help me out here. I mean, by telling me what speed would u guys recomend, if I can do something for thegame to go faster, if it really is the connection, or that I just suck at this game, anything will help.

Thanx

One of the gurus here can help you with an improved internet configuration, but I have to tell you that a 33k is REALLY slow. I'm guessing you get around 300-400 pings in an online game.

Hmm. New to online. If you press TAB in an online game to check your stats, the number at the right (I think it's the right) is your ping. Most likely, everyone else's is lower than yours.

When searching for a server to play on (I'm assuming you're using the browser in Half-Life/Retail CS) look for a server with the lowest ping.

Other than that, look into a cable connection. Once you get it, you won't believe you survived without it <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

EDIT: after a quick thought, you might be asking "why is a high ping bad?". Well, in my weak translation of all things "internet" your ping is how fast data can travel from the NS server - to your computer - and back to the NS server. The higher the ping number, the longer it takes. This is also known as "Lag".
If your screen gets a little jumpy and it looks more like a slide show than a movie, you're probably experiencing lag.

Can you not tell that every 4 seconds u move or something, i mean its pretty easy to tell whether your internet isnt good enough to play computer games.

Khan if you don't want to upgrade (or can't for any reason) go to www.skylam.com and look for Intelli Dial Up. It's a great little free program that does wonders for a dial up connection. It's supposed to work for cable too but I haven't tried it yet in that option. I used it for years when I was on 56k.

    Hope that helped.

Imagine a marine could pick up a turret and say "Look at me! I'm going to hit the huge Onos with this!". The innards of the Onos would then be covering the walls and then the marine would say "I'm the Onos killing machine!"

    Happy? <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

I'd recommend upgrading to a 56k modem if you can't get broadband. They cost almost nothing nowadays and it should make online gaming somewhat tolerable.

I can't help but feel sorry for the 65k modem users... <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> Must be horrible, although I know that you get used to it...

Its not 65k, its 56k, this will make you feel even more sorry. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    YES!! It is oficial!!
I soon won't have to worry about this, since on the 22nd I'll be upgrading my connection to a broadband one, so this problem will soon be over!!
