something i noticed
MonsE and so on have been pimping Samurai to inifinty, basically as something to do until NS 2.0 is released. So i downloaded the demo of Samurai to give it a little try. After playing, and winning, for a while i decided enough was enough and i should stop wasting my time at work () And on closing, lo and behold, the expiry date for the demo is 31st July 2003.

Does anyone else find it strange that Samurai expires the very day that NS 2.0 is released?

It's a conspiracy i tells ya!

Actually, everyones estimate for the release was 'mid-July' when the Samurai-craze started. It's a nice coincidence, though

A warrior, specifically a japanese warrior. They were renowned for their skill with their curved, single-edged swords, called "katanas". Their heyday was during the feudal days of Japan. They disappeared shortly after the Meiji restoration, when the "sword prohibition act" forbade non-government officials to carry swords. I'm writing this from memory, so I'm probably all wrong or omitting important points that more scholarly persons consider important.

TBH they we're just another medievel warrior/knight. The only real differences I can really think of is that they we're taught a form of early ju-jitsu, carried enough weapons for a small army and the armour was very effective compared to it's weight.

As i recall they got their buts handed to them whenever they faced anyone else than other samurai

    Samurai

\Sa"mu*rai`\, n. pl. & sing. [Jap.] In the former feudal system of Japan, the class or a member of the class, of military retainers of the daimios, constituting the gentry or lesser nobility. They possessed power of life and death over the commoners, and wore two swords as their distinguishing mark. Their special rights and privileges were abolished with the fall of feudalism in 1871.

Yes. The Samurai was the highest form of warrior in the feudal Japanese system - as with the knights of Europe, they were educated in all kinds of culture, as well.

One should note that the Samurai were possibly the finest warriors of their time; they were in fact so good that they managed to live on into times they were just not fit for anymore (Which was why they got "their butts handed" - fighting muskets with swords is a bad idea).
Had Japan not decided for a complete isolation, it might have well been able to challenge the mightiest country of the Dark Ages: China.

If I remember correctly Japanese battles had an almost ritual format to them, opposing armies would ride past each other for 5 - 10 minutes firing arrows on horseback before charging into each others lines. I guess westerners ignoring this and just opening up with muskets and cannons kinda screws that up

If they had all that training and suchlike, wouldn't they be able to adapt and invent new strategies and stuff? I mean, it's not like they were idiots. Rob the muskets of the fallen enemy, train up with them, THEN UNLEASH THE DOGS OF WAR. sorry, i get carried away.
