<div class="IPBDescription">Let's rip off Akira!</div> <a href='http://www.entropy.hl2central.net/' target='_blank'>Entropy Mod</a>

Here's a picture of their <a href='http://www.planethalflife.com/screenshot.asp?src=/images/screensnew/entropy_070703_02.jpg' target='_blank'>'Kyro Bike'</a>

It's nice how it really resembles the <a href='http://imagecache2.allposters.com/images/91/003_AKIRA200RP.jpg' target='_blank'>Akira</a> <a href='http://www.burningart.com/meico/motoproto/akira.html' target='_blank'>Bike</a>.

Maybe I'm just sick and tired of people coming up with unoriginal models.... but stuff like this just makes me sick everytime I see someone not even giving proper **** credit!

Hmm. A bit pretentious too. Sounds like Grand Theft Auto for HL2.

The bike does look good though.

You have to admit it is a sweet looking bike, so no wonder someone ripped it. But a gta3 like mod for hl does sound interesting, especially if they actually make it.

edit, damn it is for hl2

Sheesh, it's the EXACT SAME BIKE. I mean, come on. That's like me making a TIE-Fighter and acting like I'm special.

    *sigh*

Why can't more people come up with something original? I don't understand why anyone, talent or not, would willingly sacrifice their free time, blood sweat and effort, to bring to life something which isn't their own idea. I don't get why people want to make Matrix games, or why they want to make *yet another* CS clone. I can understand why this happens in the industry, because these game companies have to make money somehow. But I'm puzzled by why this happens with mods... Do modmakers truly believe that the world needs *another* weapons mod? I've lost count of the number of times I've seen some weapon render on PHL's news for some mod I've never heard of before or since, thought "looks kinda cool" and then realised that there are a hundred mods in development all trying to implement the perfect Beretta...

At least these guys are ripping off an idea that hasn't been ripped off before.

I got an idea for one. Put the windscreen going in a loop over the bike and onto the back, and on the sides have nothing.

    Atleast its original plagarism. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Do I care? No.

There is always plagerism. Good and bad.

It will always be there as its a major part of media. In NS you could say BathroomMonkey "Ripped off" the OICW form the old HMG.

But anyway nice model. Better than I could do.

(Also I think it hardly looks like the Akira bike. Sure it looks "similar" but not the same)

Anybody considered that they want to make an Akira mod, but are smart enough not to call it "Akiramod"?

Look at the gameplay. They're going for motorcycle gang warfare. Sounds a bit like everyone's favorite anime movie to me. :P

Not saying its good or bad, and I'm also not saying that they are or are not making an Akira-themed mod, its just something I noticed.

Although it is pretty pretentious of them to announce it as some grand saviour of mods, especially when Half-Life 2 is months away and the truth of the situation is none of us really know as much about it as we'd like to. And another thing, look at their Team page. 8 programmers. EIGHT. Holy crap that's overkill, what are they gonna do have one person do one weapon then call it quits? heh.

Yeah, I'm not too big on all these new HL2 mods cropping up all over the place. Not even a look at the features of the SDK and the grand plans are in full swing... sigh.

I think its good that people are planning things. There's a difference though between saying "Yeah we're in pre-production for a HL2 mod" and "Our HL2 mod, currently in production, is going to revoultionize gaming as we know it!". John Romero Syndrome. :P
  • SaltySalty Join Date: 2002-11-05 Member: 6970Members
What happens if it really did revolutionalize gaming? Like every game now would have motorcycles and kids with phycic powers blowing up stuff on drugs.

There hasn't been any mods to revolutionize gaming yet. None. Not even Counter-Strike, Action Quake, CTF, or Team Fortress...

Made advancements, yes, but revolutions, no.

As much as I hate it, I think CS pretty much did.

CS might have flung open the door to more HL mods, but it didn't revolutionize squat. Not one single retail game has been made which is remotely similar to CS. A revolution would mean that CS inspired legions of me-too games and changed the way we think about gaming... this is not the case.

    It's 95% the same bike.

I didn't know that the bike in Akira was the first bike to ever be red and and have an aerodynamic look.

But seriously, although I can see how the bike from Akira may have been an influence and a starting point for the basic "look" of the bike, enough seems to have been changed (the chrome, the wheels, etc) for the model to be called not a "ripoff", but more of an "inspired" model.

Revolutionized everyone claiming that everyone else is cheating, you mean. There aren't boatloads of cheats for RTS games, or even other FPS games for that matter. Half-life's popularity drew the cheaters like nothing else.

Dude, it's the 95% the EXACT same bike.

The only slight difference is the colour scheme, no stickers and they've added a vent to the front of the bike. (Which might I add is in the same spot as the American Airforce sticker)

The chrome on the bike is just a recolour as well....

I don't know where you're getting this 95% mumber, I will admit they are very similar, to similar for it to bne coincidence, but it's not a complete ripoff. Everything having to do with the back wheel is different. The wheel itself, the metal over the wheel is completely different. The peice connecting the wheel to the body of teh bike is thinner and mounted on a completely different place in the model. The fronts of the two bikes are almost identical, I will give you that, but sitting down in the model would put you in a poistion slightly higher off teh ground and more upright.
