I know all about v-sync etc.
Hi, I'm juts postiong here because I'm sure there're lots of really clever people who read this forum that can probably help me here. Firstly let me show you my PC spec:
Windows 2000 professional
AMD AthlonXP 2000+
512mb DDR 2100 RAM
GeForce 4 MX 440 (running most recent drivers with V-Sync off, no anti-aliasing)
SoundBlaster live! 1024 (also running the latest drivers)
Now I'm pretty sure i should be able to get much better fps than I currently do, which is between 60-80 when I'm walking around empty parts of the map but drops to 20-40 whenever there's a lot of stuff on my screen (buildings, chambers, aliens, marines). When I jetpack into a hive for example my fps drops to around 30 and I can no longer fly around at all, just do big jumps. So if anyone has any ideas why my fps sucks so much considering I have a pretty decent pc (albeit a fairly low-tech gfx card) please tell me what i can do to improve it. Thanks.

Make sure you are running openGL.
Also, make sure you aren't running lots of background applications. Check for spyware running your machine, eating valuable CPU cycles.
Not much more I can suggest, sounds like its possibly some obscure problem.
I have a Pentium III 850 MhZ, Geforce 2 440mx, and 386 MB RAM and I consistently get 99 FPS in non-action, high 80's in action. (50ish when comming)
you dont have to hover indefinitely in hiverooms like jackasses on Radeon 99,000's
Your motherboard drivers are as important as any other driver, and the default windows ones suck sometimes.
Also check your RAM timings in the BIOS, i had some BIOS settings wrong and I was locked at 50-60 fps no matter what resolution I used.
here are my specs
P3 800
512 sdram
radion 9200 128 se
Why do i only get 50 fps and then drop to about 14 on open gl and res 800x600
Or is this what i should be getting

my brothers computer has a gf4mx440 and runs ns at 1280x1024 opengl at 99fps. p4 1.7ghz and xp on it. although i prefer vsync on (85fps since monitor sticks at 85hz) cos i hate the vertical tearing. and its only got 492mb sdram.
tbh he should be getting max fps out of that machine!
the system itself (bar the gfx card new hdd) is about 3 years old.
p4 (no idea what core, built it too long ago) 1.7ghz
486mb sdram (all 3 slots used)
gf 4 mx 440 64mb agp8x
QDI Platnix 2 skt 478 motherboard w/ intel i845 chipset
1x 80gb and 1x 60gb hdds (7200rpm)
win xp pro sp2
i have optimised it as much as poss. and made sure it aint cluttered with crap i wont ever need or use.
i truely have no idea why u dont get max performance out of ur box.
i even managed to scrape 20-30 fps (not constant) off my p3 500 with gf2 mx at 640x480 lowest detail on NS.
ati_subdiv
ati_npatch
Set them both to 0, then load up NS.
In 99% of cases, this has gained people around 30-50 fps
