A couple of announcements concerning Day of Defeat come in the same press release this afternoon. Valve Software have announced an "official partnership" agreement with the Day of Defeat team.
DoD 3.0 Coming Next Week
Valve and the Day of Defeat team today announced an official partnership for continued development of the World War II-based Half-Life MOD. In addition, Day of Defeat 3.0 is due to launch next week, and will mark the introduction of new missions and gameplay types, a new player class, and more. First shown at the Third Annual Half-Life MOD Expo in San Francisco late last year, Day of Defeat is a team-based action game based upon the great battles, equipment, and scenarios of WWII. For more information, visit www.dayofdefeatmod.com.
As you can see in the press release also, Beta 3.0 of Day of Defeat is due out next week.

As planethalflife says, Valve is going to support DoD official now. That are 1) great news because DoD will get even better and 2)bad news because the same can happen now that happens to CS.
What do you think?

Don't say valve ###### up CS, the community did. Valve offered the mod the opportunity to expand, I think CS is a good example for other mod teams, shows other teams what is possible if they keep working at their mod. Sure the CS team made mistakes , mostly with handling the community. That's what i like about NS, these forums and IRC are run by competent people s:)
Will we now see a standalone release of DoD aswell ?
I guess that's sort of guaranteed with a mod as popular as this
I think CS is much better than most people say (well, many says "CS is lame" only because others wants to hear that i think)
I myself find DoD great, it's realistic (not too much), it's fun (not too little) and it's nice (not too laggy).
So the only reason why NS may not get official/retail would be that valve stops supporting mods and focus on HL 2 or another engine...
You -do- realize that the teams doing mod support and working on the new projects are completely separate, right?
Pshaw.
Yes, they are two independent teams at valve but I'm sure when Valve releases a new engine, they want the mod-community to use that new one. So they will reduce/stop their supporting on mods that uses the old engine. Perhaps they offers the mod-develpers help to transfer their mod to the new engine... But that's all very speculative as i don't think that a new engine will be here soon (maybe 2 or 3 years...)
Muahahahhaha.

As far as future engines go, I now think that UT2k3 is going to be the engine to mod for until DOOM III comes out. Its looking really really nice to mod authors...
/me makes a note of this
Just in case.
About TF2, I'll be the LAST person (and some of you know why ) to say it's long overdue. But, it is understandable why it's overdue... the class-based teamplay pioneered by Quake Team Fortress is stale. Old. And on top of that, newer and better things kept coming along, such as Counter-Strike. What developer in his or her right mind would look at what is, basically, the most popular online game of its kind - and several other kinds - and not decide to retool their own game to include some 'Realism' elements a la CS? Or look at their engine, realise it's out of date (Heck, a couple guys in Nebraska just made their own game/engine that ranks up there with Q3/UT... well, almost) and decide they need a new engine?
Et cetera.
There's reasons for TF2's delays. I don't agree with them -- but they're reasons.
Short expansions? When has there been a =long= expansion, lately? Heck, full games are short nowadays. My nephew was just bragging to me two days ago that he beat all the console games we rented this week... five games in four days. Man, I'm glad we only rented them!
Anyway, back on topic... While I'm sure it's great, I don't play DOD. Never really had enough interest to bear the download, heh. Though the news of official partnership with valve is immensly exciting to me. The guys must have done an incredible job, so congratulations and good luck to them.
Anybody that talks badly about VALVe or their practices hasn't been paying any attention and likes to present rumors as fact.

Seriously though, most people critizising Valve do that either out of a 'professional company == bad' or a 'complete and utter jerk' point of view.
I can remember big discussions in CS.net about how Valve and Gearbox would ruin CS by CZ - before the friggin game was even officially announced.
All that 'HL 1.x.x.x. has fux0red my PC' talk would've never happened with another company - because hey would've stopped supporting their product nine months after the release.
For HL2 and TFC2, I couldn't care less. Leave them their time, and if something great comes out - wonderful. If not, they can at least not say they had been rushed
Indeed.
And we must not forget Half-Life.
You know how all action games these days are at least somewhat story driven, and a lot more immersive than before 1998? Why?
HALF-LIFE.
