through a proxy
I'm leaving for university in a few months and I am hoping to set up an NS dedicated server while I'm there (1 meg bandwidth ). But heres my problem theres a WAN set up where everything (from every campus and all accomadation) goes through 1 proxy server, with 1 ip address, what do I need to do so people can play on the server (i can't install anything on the proxy cause only the staff have access to it)

Itll be a challenge, you have to get someone to portforward all the ports to your box
Which is probably not policy and that setup is intended to prevent you doing this kind of thing.

The good news is you can run one interally for all your uni friends, probably.

    :/

yeah an internal server is no problem, I know theres a lecturer at uni that likes gaming so I might be able to persuade him to forward those ports, is there a way to detect half life only traffic so anything else goes to the correct computers?

You'll probably have enough ppl at the university playing on your box...if you have the horsepower, put up a CS server as well to gain popularity first.

Yeah, looks like thats whats going to happen, theres 12,000 people of which computing has the most people on the course, and theres a lecturer here that organises lan parties, so there must be a community... somewhere...
