The reason they're not bright red is because they want those pesky aliens to trip them without seeing them. What you're doing would probably be considered cheating by a vast number of people, myself included.
The thing is, any change whatsoever that would make it easier to be seen would be considered a cheat by many, since it would give you an unfair advantage.
Besides all that, i've never had a problem seeing mines before, it's not like they're totally invisible or anything. I guess it helps to know the common places mines get put on each map however.

You really shouldnt admit to using such crappy models. If your gonna cheat at least brighten the skulk textures or invert them or something, dont use red, red baaaaaaaaaaaaaad.
