Are you using the NS desktop shortcut? If so, stop using it, its bugged, use the start menu shortcut or run HL and activate NS via "custom game"

No, I never use the shortcut.

/me mumbles, grr, the shortcut could NOT effect this, pls know what is wrong with the short cut before you suggest it is the problem (this is nearly as bad as some thing wrong? reinstall/reformat)

ok, lets see. So NS was working before you went on yuor break?

when HL Hangs what do you do? f4, cntrl-alt-del, esc?
Try simply shutting down, restarting. Then when Win boots up, open up the Task manager. Go to the second taB (Processes) And start killing all nonesential tasks. Also empty out your system tray.

My selection is based off of the guess that you are one of those people who just leaves his computer running 24/7 (actualy not a good idea). So there is a possibility that there si some progie running that you killed some time ago that has now started up and is interfearing.

gl, give us some more feed back, oh and what OS do you run?

That STILL didn't work... and I'm running Windows 98SE. I always shut all non-important tasks down before I play any game anyway. I shut my computer down before I left and when I turned it on HL doesnt work... but it seems it turned into ALL games. (IE. Warcraft III doesnt show the beginning menu screen (after the cg) and freezes and I have to restart my computer, UT2003 freezes when trying to play it.) I'm thinking that I need to reformat but I want to avoid that. I have updated drivers for everything.

    wow, impressive mate.

    virus scan?
change drivers (try changing them 1 by 1 to different drivers to see if something is borking)

lol, mate update your OS, alot of that isn't being ussed to the full extent b/c you are running 98SE (especialy that ram, 98 has problems with anything over 128)

really, sorry. mabey MonsE or some one smarter ten my self will be able to help.

I've ran Norton Antivirus 2003, Ad-Aware, and system maitenance about 3 times...
Already tried the driver switching, and I wish I had more money so I can get a new OS <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo--> . I've been looking into XP but I'm broke. =\

EDIT: I'm going to try completely reinstalling my video card. I'll tell you if it works...

    see if that does anything.

I'm losing hope here... I may have to reformat the hard drive. When I uninstalled my OLD video card (ATI Radeon 9000 Pro) it seems the uninstaller missed some files which are scattered all over the place. Also, reinstalling the G4 Ti4600 didn't do jack. Also tried reinstalling OpenGL and many of my games, nothing changed.

ok, if it does come down to a reformat remember these things:

    1) Find all of your installers first (just go through your programs and check em off)
    2) back up your documents (especialy if you are still in school, they will come in handy)
    3) go through everything piece by piece picking out things to backup and save and those that can be left.

gl, I hope it dosn't come down to that, though I am outa ideas.

Thansal your totally wrong about his RAM

Win9x systems can support 512MB of ram with no tweaking, and up to 1.5GB (on
some systems) with a little help.

Win9x systems can *theoretically* utilize (IE: "see") up to 2GB of physical
RAM and 2GB of virtual RAM. However, the *practical* limit is more like 1GB.

For systems exceeding 512MB, you should add this line to the [vcache]
    section of system.ini:

    MaxFileCache=512000

And, actually, that line should represent 70% of the system RAM up to a
maximum of 524288. This tweak may also be useful on systems using 128MB or
better, but the upper limit is essential on systems exceeding 512MB of RAM

It has also been documented by Microsoft that you should not exceed 1.5GB of
RAM in any systems using Win9x, please see:
