<div class="IPBDescription">Does this look like gloom?</div>This looks a lot like the mod for Quake 2 called Gloom. Not that its a bad thing or anything. If you have Quake 2 and you want something to sink your teeth into while you are waiting for NS then go to www.planetgloom.com

Oh, my god!  What a great idea!  Thanks for pointing that out to us.

You're only the hundreth person to do so ;)

Seriously, though, NS isn't Gloom.  They're both Marines vs. Aliens games, but that's about the extent of it.

There was a thread on Gloom yesterday.  :)

    Try <a href="http://www.natural-selection.org/cgi-bin/ikonboard/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=1;t=3643" target="_blank">the thread here</a>.

I think many of the forum goers around here are tired of hearing about Gloom (I'm never tired of it! :).  But yes, both MODs cater to a similar crowd.  There are quite a few of us Gloomers looking forward to NS.  Gloomers are you <i>friends</i>, not enemies!  ;)

Well, although some ideas may seems similiar, you risk to get very unliked if you compare NS with gloom. The Developers of NS have always been very carefull to protect the mod from get foxed (forbidden because of copyrights) and also always tried to make a unique game.
I think you'll earn some not so nice comments, don't take them too serious as quite a few here played or still plays gloom and your idea that there are similarity isn't new to them.

Which is both rediculous and unfortunate.  Honestly, I was pretty turned off of the NS community at first because of that very attitude.

I didn't want to say that you mustn't <i>compare</i> it with gloom. Thats not the point because if you compare it, you'll see thats completley different.
What i wanted to say was that Natural Selection IS different from ANY other game/mod and that its developers doesn't want that the rumor goes that something is "copied" from anther mod/game.

BTW, welcome to the forum Penguine!

I'd really like a link to one of these posts where someone actually did claim "Gloom = NS!".  I didn't find it doing searches when I first arrived on these forums (linked to here from a Gloom forum ironically enough).  I found plenty of "NS != GLOOM so STFU!" posts though.

Sure there are posts claiming the MODs are similar (and I firmly believe they are), but there is nothing wrong with that.  You can legitimately compare NS with any team-based FPS game.  I'm excited about the release for NS more so <i>because</i> I'm a Gloomer, not in spite of it.

You people are hyper-sensitive on this issue, and it gives the impression that Gloom players are not welcome here (at least to me).

    <b>Penguin:</b>

Maybe someone will read your post, check out Gloom, and be mature enough to play both.  That's how mod communities grow.

Don't let the offensive <b>"....lock?....."</b>, <b>"I hereby Declare penguin a moron"</b>, and the defensive <b>"NS isn't Gloom!"</b> posts get to you.

I don't recall ever seeing any actual threads with a subject along the lines of "Teh NS = Teh Gloom!!1 WTFz0rZ!?"

However, I have seen people bring it up in various threads many times in the past. Did you just try searching all threads for posts with the word gloom? You might come across some of these long-lost discussions (unless they were deleted or edited).

Alright guys, calm down for a bit, eh? I'm sure penguin was expressing a few casual similarities between the two mods, and pointing out the location for anyone who didn't know it... not saying that "NS is a rip-off of gloom, you guys suck". Try to be a little more welcoming and a little less like rabid wolves waiting for dinner.

I guess it's not as big of a fuss for some people; the ones who already know that NS is totally different.
  • SlycasterSlycaster Limited Edition Join Date: 2002-01-24 Member: 24Members, NS1 Playtester
The reason why i post things like that is NOT because it has to do with Gloom and NS, but the fact that they DON'T take ANYTIME to read other posts that are the SAME.  They create topics of the exact same nature when one was just done a day earlier, please all the forum n00bs if you about to post something, whether it be idea's or not, make sure it HASN'T been said.

I have this nifty movie of Gloom set to Rob Zombie music. I think I got it from www.planetgloom.com

Czech it out if you don't feel like DLing the whole game and jumping right in, just to see what it's all about.

Being here for a while now, I have never seen a NS = Gloom discussion (discussion = more than a single, lonely post), but also never anything that even came <i>near</i> "NS != Gloom, so STFU". Such speech is usually not used in these forums.

Flayra knew and played Gloom before even starting with work on NS, so I can really not see a general bias against Gloom and its players.

On the subject of being sensitive about getting mixed up with other mods / games / movies, aside from the foxing issue, we just got the last problems on this line behind us; another HL mods developers actually blamed NS for being too good for a mod (!!!).
You get a little itchy after such stuff.

Please understand that nobody, absolutely <i>no-one</i> will be treated with any kind of bias in this community; we've got a pretty good track record in this respect.
So come on in, have a donut, join the party, and please don't react oversensitive if someone states that there are differences between mods when there obviously are such.

Oh, and the next one declaring anyone else a "moron" in here will get something from me. Something ticking.

Was that directed at the post immediately prior to yours? If so, why?

Or were you merely commenting on the discussion that had come before?

You are right, I should not have quoted the "so STFU" part.  It is just as inaccurate for me to say that, as it is for those responding to every Gloom post with the canned "NS != Gloom" response.  Perhaps I am being oversensitive as you theorize, but I wonder how many others are more sensitive and didn't bother coming back here at all?  There is definitely a hostile undertone there.

No harm done with me.  I didn't mean for this to be a "huge deal".  I just wanted to talk about Gloom AND NS for the things they have in common, and for the things they do not.

Hmmm. How about everyone chill out and take a breath. Regardless of NS fan posts, we on the team have nothing against Gloom, and there are of course similarities. I'm sure Gloom got more than their fair share of comparisons with something else when they came out, be it movies or books or Blake Stone or whatever. We maintain a very friendly and social forum, as you will see after you spend more time here.

    And that. Is. That.
