Jiles prepared to leave the dropship that was deployed to the USS-Reno. He looked around him nervously. Yes he had been part of the TSA for three months but he never saw any action, which was surprising considering most troops are placed right into combat two or three weeks after they are deployed. Sure Jiles has participated in many of the past missions, but all of those included routine scanning procedures and mop-up work. But this mission was different.
This was the closest infestation to Earth that had ever happened before, thus making it one of the most important missions the TSA has ever embarked upon. Jiles knew this, he had been briefed extensively for the past three days. His head swam with standard combat procedure that every TSA should know. But in reality, he knew nothing. He had been put on point five times in the last month, and quite frankly, it scared the **** out of him. An alien could be standing a few feet in front of him and he wouldn't know what to do. Thats why he has had nightmares for the past two weeks about this mission. In most people's eyes he is considered a veteran, but he knows the truth. He is too afraid to say anything to anybody for he might loose the respect of his fellow comrades.
"Prepare to initiate the phase-in" screamed the voice over the intercom.
Jiles thought to himself that he had made a mistake, a huge mistake for volunteering for the TSA. He had no idea what he was getting himself into when he signed up. He always imagined the TSA to be proud warriors fighting for the freedom of the world, recieving little or no resistance from the alien threat. Soon he realized that this wasn't true, when he realized the sheer amount of casualties and lost battles that were kept top secret from the public. Sometimes he wondered how long this was would last, and how would it end. There has to be an easier way, he thought to himself. This just seems to unreal, we humans fighting for our survival against aliens we don't understand.
Jiles's view of the dropship quickly faded as his molecules were de-magnetized then shot through space-time to the spaceship where his body was quickly reconstructed. He could feel the surge of nanites through his body and noticed his now active visor. Now him and his squad of 16 broke up into 2 groups of 8 in order to search for a suitable forward outpost. His visor kept him in constant contact with all of his friends. He no longer felt fear. Jiles didn't know why, perhaps it was some kind of drug his armor automatically gives him or some new kind of nanite that supresses emotions. He just walked down the hallway, dazed. It felt like a childhood dream to him. Jiles was still aware of his surroundings, but he didn't process what he saw. He continued on like this for an hour. It was hard to find a suitable outpost, since this was an old civilian spacecraft not equipped with many reserves of nano-sludge. But they continued anyways.
"Squad two has found a suitable location, please proceed to waypoint alpha", his commander reported over his headset. His squad turned around the way it came from. They maneuvered around the hallway like rats trying to find cheese in a maze. When they arrived at the waypoint they found themselves in a small living quarters of some kind. This location was chosen because it was located over the ship's main supply of nano-sludge. It was unfortunate though, because the room was small and hard to defend.
Jiles prepared for his next task.
