Ns Is Amazing (obviously)

<div class="IPBDescription">But how far will it go?</div> What is the big limitation as far as NS is concerned? Is it Flayras imagination? Perhaps he lacks the coding skill to make it much better than it is?
Or maybe, just maybe, its that he has reached the boundary of what the average home PC can realitically do. But then remember Quake. Or Doom. Or Wolf 3D. They were at the time, the peak of what computers could handle. And look what we have now.

What I am asking, good people, is that you consider what the future of NS may hold. With better computers, and newer engines, where is the actual limit.

I say this because I have just had a vision. Not a "God just spoke to me and he said "NS will be..."" but realistic, hopeful image in my mind. What we have atm is small maps (Don't take that the wrong way, they are fantastic maps, but still within a finite amount of space) and limited numbers. Imagine a game where there is a supreme commander, and he commands a handful of leightenents (sp?), and they in turn command... down to the commander with a squad of troops, playing alongside many commanders,each with a squad of troops, each playing a small but important role in the battle for a planet that is taking place across the <b>whole</b> planet <b>at the same time</b>, each troops win or loss having an effect, the effectivness of the command chain being tested, the skill of the commander being tested at each level.

I am rambling, I know and perhaps this should have been in off topic (This isn't really what I meant to write, but it has gotten away from me) but the point remains, that what we have, this fantastic game, could be the surface of gaming for the generation to come.

Is NS really wolf3D?

    Well, the only way ns can really get any better in the ways you are talking about is if it were on a better engine. Flayra is being held back by the limits of half life.

    I think, as you suggest, that we're just scratching the surface of future gaming with this game.
    Flayra's will be a name prominent in the future of online gaming.

    Yeah! I can remember the bit in the Beta testing where they said "Look, we're going to take down the servers to add in Commanders, Buildings, Sub-Commanders and a few new weapons. And, oh yeah, we're adding a new race called the Kharra."

    Please, <b>please</b> everyone, stop comparing <b>every single</b> MMOFPS idea to Planetside. Anyway, planetside is just Tribes 2 with more people, so it's hardly <b>that</b> original.

    Anyway, HL2 is out soon, and they're trying to make the code as accessable as possible to modders, and a programmer with Flayra's skill shouldn't have much trouble doing what he wants with it. As for HL 1.... I think they've pushed it to it's limits tbh.

    I like NS,I love NS, Flayra did great,awesome etc.I hope he plans to do more mods and I would be more than happy to help Flayra out in anyway I can making suggestions,ideas,weapons,models, concept art (I was born with an excellent talent of drawing) But NS is Flayra's mod and anything he says goes.


    As for the balancing stuff,stuff being overpowered in a way I do not think that's the case I think it lies in the skill of the people using the weapons,how early they use them, not being able to counter anything,this is where skills come in.


    overall thing of NS : Survival Of The Fittest,Do EVERYTHING in your power to wipeout the enemy before he has a chance to blink and wipe you out.


    With HL2 coming out and the CODE coming out being available to modders n coders etc. I forsee a NS 3,4,5 lol.

    can you imagine from what I seen of the HL2 demo movie can you imagine what a fade and ONOS would look like?     Do you mean, will new games appear now using the kind of RTS/FPS blend that NS uses? Yeah, course they will. There's that game called Savage or something, that is doing that (nope, they didn't copy NS, they both started production about the same time i think), so even if NS wasn't made, it would of happened. They're running out of ideas, everyone is. You can tell by the amount of sequels (even films, i mean, come on, Disney films always end with a "Lived happily ever after". How can they make sequels?). But i've said it from the start, NS is most likely going to go retail in the next few patches, and i guess it will take off from there. Be interesting to see though, i think this is the first mod i've been involved with from the start (not the forums, the mod.)

    That's true, the only games I'm looking forward to are sequels; Deux Ex 2: Invisible War, Halo 2, Half-Life 2, and Doom III. It sounds like you simply want NS on a larger scale. Hell, I can understand that. An unreleased fanfic I'm writing has some HUGE aliens in in fighting some pretty damn large AI tanks (easily in the 300-ton range). The infantry combat is one hell of a ferocious melee... Anyways, NS on the "Planetside scale" would be a gargantuan challenge to develop. Best engine I can see for this would be BF1942's, but those graphics seem ugly to me (lo res textures *shudder*), something at least as pretty as Unreal 2 to play on my shiny new Alienware <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->. Vehicles and a persistent world seem to be the biggest factors in taking NS to the next generation. Breed comes pretty close to what I'm describing.     Flayra was the first person to realise that a FPS/RTS could work. Most of the time when people suggested it, the response was "well how do we make sure people do as they are ordered, or what if no-one wants to go commander?" all problems that NS has, but that doesn't mean we don't play it. He had the freedom to do this because it didn't matter if NS wasn't successful, well except the disappointment he would have felt after 2 years of coding.

    I will always think of him as the father of FPS/RTS.

    I'm very impressed with what Flayra has done in the HL engine. VERY impressed.

    It's a shame how the relatively few FPS/RTSs out there have been overlooked. Battlezone (1 and 2) and Giants:Citizen Kabuto were fantastic games.

    I recall reading something in PCGamer a very long time ago about Team Fortress 2 having a "commander" much in the style of NS.

    It's been made as a MMOFPS called PlanetSide. Although it's humans vs humanoid-aliens, it does capture the sense of a planetary war. It's also missing the whole chain of command thing. I think it would be excellent. Seing a whole pack of Oni coming towards you and your squad-mates as you man your guns in a bunker. Your Lt. calling for back-up or retrieval, and then dying. <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo-->

    It's a great idea, but for time being, HL can't do that type of thing, and it takes a lot of work + good severs working in tandem to actually get it to work.

    Ahh... Giants: Citizen Kabuto....     Is Giants: Citizen Kabuto mutliplayer? If it isn't than it isn't a FPS/RTS really. Those little dudes with high tech weaponry can sorta be considered FPS/RTS, but if it don't go online, then bleh, it's nothing at all.



    NS is orginal in the fact that:

    a.) It's the best executed I've ever seen
    b.) Can be played on even a really shotty comp
    c.) It's orginal in the fact has two <b>completely</b> different playstyles. No other game I've ever seen comes even remotly close in terms of gameplay orginality.



    So, in summary of FPS/RTS history: NS clearly hits the benchmark. This is why it will be remembered, and this is also why it will probably thrive.


    Take this in example: The RTS genre really didn't get popular untill Warcraft, Command & Conquer, and Starcraft (esp. Starcraft). However, RTS's existed long before these games came out, yet everyone knows that these games weren't the first RTS's ever made. But we all do know that these games were the benchmark RTS's that really set the stage as a truely competant gameplay platform.

    This is the same for NS.

    Remember, it's not about who does it first; it's about who does it the <b>first one to do it best.</b> And in my mind, NS is the one who is the first one to do it best in the genre of RTS/FPS. That is why we can all agree that NS is something special.

    the first FPS/RTS games i remember are battlezone and tribes but there sure were some before those ones too. it's funny how so many peeps consider NS to be the first one of it's genre, i remember battlezone having a commander mode too(instead of a chair you could sit in every vehicle used for attack and adjust them which was pretty need). now peeps are constant thinking that all FPS/RTS will be ripp-offs from NS.
