Hey. Just download the v1.04 patch and unzip it to your ns directory, overwriting what's there. That will work both as a dedicated server and as a listen server.

Yup, I do the same thing and 1.04 works fine. I would also suggest getting whichbots, they are rule.

To elaborate on Jefe's reply, you can get WhichBot at <a href='http://whichbot.com' target='_blank'>whichbot.com</a> (download link is also in my sig).

It'll work with either 1.0 or 1.04, and it doesn't matter whether you install the NS v1.04 patch before or after the bot.

Depends what you mean by smart. They have a bunch of cool AI stuff internally, but the end result is that they're better than a beginning NS player, but worse than the average NS player, in my opinion.

Of course, I'm horribly biased since I wrote it, so you really need to hear it from people who didn't write it. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

The gorges are somewhat scared of the marine buildings. Mostly they prefer to wander around building things and leave the rushing to the skulks.

Whichbots are good at applying pressure. Basically it flows like this:

The start: All WBs except maybe one (which is the designated fatty) rush the marine base at start. If you are a little slow in getting organised, the game can end right here. They tend to attack in waves, eating marines first and IPs second. They don't ambush, they don't retreat, they just attack. They move well, jump a lot, and never miss with bites. They always parasite everyone. Unless you've got a steady aim or a long corridor, they can be very dangerous.

As the marines get out of thier base, the skulks will start to occasionally rove and go after structures and marines. They will still be attacking your base on a regular basis. I'd say that, early on, the bots play skulks to about 75% of an average players skill. That's pretty freakin' good, IMO. They diminish at higher levels, because they don't use leap or xenocide as well as a human would.

The Gorge isn't terribly aggressive, and tends to get hives up late, if ever. It will put DCs and OCs in hives, but not at other chokepoints. It will build RTs, but won't defend them. Overall, say maybe 20% of average, simply because it can't think with the high level strategy and finesse needed for this position.

Fades are the travesty. They don't seem to ever blink. It's understandable why, but really lessens the impact of the Fade. The WB fade, while still a killing machine vs. an LMG marine, is far from the game ender it can be in a human's hands. Maybe 10% of average, because it doesn't properly use it's long range weapons (acid rockets and bile bomb) or Blink. A WB fade can easily be undone by just two turrents.

Don't think I'm down on WB due to the low percentages. 20% is really a very good mark.

Sure, it could be better, but how many mainframe clusters and AI professors do you expect to be involved? As a programmer and AI hobbyist, I am extremely impressed by the strides made so far by Clamatius. Especially as the HL engine doesn't exactly give any help on the AI side.

It's fairly easy to turrent creep any map against WBs alone. Basically, if you don't die immediately, you should never use. WBs just can't handle turrents.

IMO WBs really shine in two cases:

    1) Introducing new players to the game in a safe, LAN environment (I'm bringing three friends along this way at the moment). It allows them to get used to the game without the pain of playing a pub server. They'll learn the very basic techniques, like following orders, firing weapons, and covering corners.

    2) Filling in an unbalanced LAN game. WBs do well as filler for the alien side, as long as at least one human can play the Gorge. One human player as Gorge can compensate for the WBs lack of strategic thinking.

Summary: Very good considering the demanding depth of NS. It's always worth a download to try out. And you can't beat the cost! <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
