<div class="IPBDescription">NS Crippling Error.</div> Well, there's actually no error per se. I have no idea what's going on.
NS works fine, i can use the console to goto a map (using "map ns_nancy" or whatever). But when i try to connect to a server it all goes balls. It tries to connect, then it stops. No error message, but nothing happens. According to the Win2k task manager hl.exe is using no cpu processing power at all. I don't understand this at all, and it's hurting my NS addiction >_<.
So pleeeease can anyone help me. I've reinstalled HL, the 1.1.1.0 patch, NS 1.0 client and it does it. It sucks.

[EDIT] Yup, works absolutely fine. [/EDIT]
Yup, all the newest possible and were working last night.
Not actually downloaded anything, so a virus is doubtful (puter been turned off all day whilst at work).
Nope, not changed any port settings, same as yesterday.
See above.
Nope.
Windows has been 100% stable for several months. Not a single crash or problem whatsoever.
Do you start HL via a 3rd party programme. Eg. ASE
What kind of connection have you got?

It's happened on every server i've tried.
It happens both with a third party programme and connecting through the console.
I'm on 512kbit ADSL.
I joined a server, it came up with the server blurb then just stopped at the point where you wait for it to connect to the game in progress. Although my problem resolved its self most of the time by quitting and retry from ASE. It seems to be fine now though, however afaik i didn't do anything to fix it. I had ADSL and win2k when I had this problem so that could be partly the problem.
Have you tired disabling all background programmes and firewalls etc. before you join? It could be that one of them has changed its settings without you knowing or just throwing up errors for no good reason.
Edit: How much RAM have you got?

I don't even get as far as to the server MOTD.
I've got 512mb ram.
Also test it with all the none essential background programmes shut down. (Basically anything that isn't essential to have windows, NS and your connection running, including your anti-virus software and firewall)
We have no idea what caused it, and even stranger than that, no idea what fixed it.
Oh well.
Only thing that mathers: It works! <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

I'd be inclined to agree that it would be a local connection problem or my ISP, but 3 seperate people on different ISPs, it's too big to be just me =\
But as you say, it works, so who cares <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
not necesarily with ISP, or with the servers them selves. But possibly some where along the line to said places the conection gets flakey. I am really not sure if this is true, just sorta speculation.
One piece of advice is to get the IPs of the servers, ping/tracert to there. Also call your ISP and talk to them. Be very precise, tell them that you are having prolems connecting to xxx servers and see what they can tell you <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
system OS: win98se
cpu: intel p4 2.4
RAM: 512 MB
MB: shuttle sb61g2
video: nvidia geforce2 gts pro (I back reved to the MS certified detonator driver)
*note this is a new system - I've not had NS running on this before.
But I can load a map from console. HL and other mods (CS) work fine.
uninstall/reinstall HL and all mods -even re-dl all hl/mod updates (just in case)
One thing I do notice is that when I browse for server in HL all the NS have the warning triangle. I'm not sure exactly what this means - incompatible versions? I've got the 1.0 client... Can I get more information about the warning indicator
Tried limiting ram to 256 - no change.
Seems others are having similar issues - unfortuneately I can't provide a solution yet.
But perhaps sharing info will provide a common thread that can be used to unravel this. Until then I'll keep trying... not much time left before withdraw symtoms set in...

I tried disableing my sound drivers and game worked fine... verified that I had the latest release - even tried the beta drivers. Things are just not happy with the onboard realtek ac'97 in my shuttle case... so installed my old xitel platnium and voilla - I'm on my way to NS nirvanna again.
