I am sure you have read the mapping guildlines -- they so no outdoor areas. I sure hope that a player can only LOOK at those rocks and not accualty get on them. Making an outdoor map for NS = a world of problems.

You took the words right outta my mouth Steve. Sure you can make the map, it will be a great 'custom' map. :)

That's true, however those rocks are simply amazing Nay, You and Badmofo have awesome terrain editing skills.

looks pretty, though i'm not sure how it'd play.

it'd be hella fun for a flyer.. hella annoying for a bob though cause half his fun is hiding on ceilings above marines waiting to drop and have lunch...

but from a mapping standpoint, it does look quite good :)

looks nice, but outdoor areas aren't encouraged, it's fine if you can make it fit the theme (cfr. hera).
Bad, glad to see you're still around, sorry to hear that about ns_sync s:( .
And the probs wit houtdoor areas are: 1. how do you explain the presence of commander mode in an outside area ? 2. Flyers s:/

yep rocks were made using triangles...........

/me used squares really >lol<
• RebornReborn Join Date: 2002-06-24 Member: 814Members
Wow! You did that in 30 minutes? I'm impressed. It takes me 30 minutes just to make it look real, and about 40 minutes trying to fix the problems.

Those rocks look incredible, especially considering that you did them all "manually". Nice realistic looking lighting too.

One thing though... It's pretty much completely the opposite of what an NS level should look like. Perhaps it would be better suited for a different mod. It'd be a shame to waste it... As interfector pointed out, there are many problems when outdoors areas are used. But these technicalities aside (anyone could come up with a million excuses, "I'll put clipping or a gravity push thing", "The commander could see outside with satillite links" , etc...) but the fact still remains that it doesn't look a thing like NS. Looks wonderful, but would probably be better suited for a different mod.

wait.. triangles... are u using world craft or a more advanced program? cuz i could do sumthin like that in milkshape 3D but i've never known much about worldcraft.. other then the primitives

looks pretty leet you should make different landscape textures through for different elevation levels that blen itno each other. Then add some model rocks. trees whatever the environment requests

if you cant use it for NS you might consider useing it for the Starship troopers mod they are into this sort of maps , can u do caves aswell , becouse they are esspesially looking for that

i think i made myself a bit unclear at the start, at the mo there will only be a few outside places, most of it will be like any other ns map and it will be inside, not even to sure if you will be able to run around on the outside, just adds to the views
• NayNay Join Date: 2002-06-09 Member: 741Members
oh and i`m using worldcraft just making squares then vertexing then to a triangle then make those unflat edging terrain

That's been thought of too, and Flayra has repeatedly said no to any outdoor areas at all. He was even weary of an indoor greenhouse.

I recall that ns_hera has an outdoor area, complete with a ledge that players can fall off of. Narby's ns_romana6 has a small outdoor area as well, but at least he had the good sense to apply clip planes to prevent players from dying. Both these maps are in the playtest lineup.

Personally, I don't really like the concept of outdoor areas, although Merk's outdoor area in Hera is soooo pritty.

What about an outdoor readyroom?

I had the entrance of an underground research lab in mind with the main entrance as the start for the marines, and a broken vent as the start for the aliens.

Not that I'll ever decently begin, let alone finish that map, but just wondering.

then its nicely done.......

umm, an outdoor readyroom?
dunno......

Wow, that's amazing. Coincidentally, I was trying out Tribes 2 earlier (I deleted it already, kinda dissapointed.)

How do you get the textures to look so good and sharp?

Suggestion: Give glass walkways like ns_hera with places to literally "hang out" outdoors! Fresh air ahhhh!

I don't see an issue with an outdoor RR, because the commander can't see up there. However, it should show some way of transitioning from the outside to the indoors, whether you do it in the RR or at the start of the map.

Outdoor readyrooms could be cool. Actually, you could use any kind of readyroom if you just wanted to have fun. Airport terminal, tropical beach, dentist's office... anywhere, and you can just slap on a few phase gates.
