How Do I Run A Server.........

<div class="IPBDescription">proxy or firewall detected?</div> I don't plan to run a dedicated server, but sometimes I just want to run a normal internet one so some of my friends and I can have our own game (without LAN) without other people coming in. Anyway, I think I must have a "proxy or firewall" as gamespy tells me but I don't know what a proxy is and I don't know how to deactivate either of them. So please help me.

Btw I have:

Windows XP
Pentium 4
2.4 Gigahertz
512 RAM (I believe)
and Cable internet (Rogers) though I'm not sure of the exact speed.

How many slots do you think possible without people lagging up?

I'm pretty sure you don't have a proxy server, but you may have a firewall. WinXP has a firewall built in that is usually activated by default. You can check to see if it is on. To check to see if your firewall is on.

    1. Click Start >> Control Panel.
    2. In the control panel click Network Connections (you may have to click Network and Internet Connections first)
    3. You should have "Local Area Network" and possibly a Connection icon for your cable modem. Right click on one of these and click "Properties".
    4. In the new window, click the Advanced tab on the top of the window.
    5. There should eb a check box that says "Protect my computer and network..." Uncheck this.

Most cable interent services have only 128k upstream. You can usually get away with 4-6 people without too much trouble.

Are you behind a router? If you are you may need to forward the correct ports in your router's fireware. Also, do you have sv_lan set to 0?

I do have a router but I don't know how forward the correct ports in my routers fireware. And I don't have a clue sv_lan is. Something you activate/deactivate from the ns console I would assume?

Yes, sv_lan is basically a cvar telling whether your server is lan or internet. Be sure to change it to 0. As far as forwarding ports in your router, I'd consult your router manual. It should tell you how to access the firmware and change those kinds of options. From what I understand, you'll need to forward ports 27000-27020 and you should be fine.
