Fade Blinking

howto?
ok, i'm not new to the game but i'll post this here anyway, i think it's fair to say that i'm a average marine and an above average alien...

however, i just can't get the blinking right!
i heard ppl say you should jump, crouch while in the air and hit you blink, but that doesn't seem to work either...
i know blinking is bugged right now, but i see other players do it, so it must be possible atleast part of the time
got tips?

Well, while you are in the air crouched, aim little bit up and then press fire.
It doesn't work very well in small hallways or rooms, but it should work in "big" places.

It's also very hard to get it to work in narrow or low corridors. Try a long, straight, onobstructed stretch like f.eks. the tram tunnel in "whatever map has engine room, feedwater and refinery hives", you know, the one with the revolving door at marine spawn. Jump, crouch and hit the attack button in midair, aiming at the approximate center of the wall at the end of the tunnel. You should be able to blink all the way to the end. If THAT doesn't work, something is wrong.

hmm i'll give it a try then, tnx!

btw the map is bast =) oh and WHY do you have to be in the air crouched? is it a bug or put in on purpose to make blinking harder?

Also watch out not to blink at any structures or small map entities. You can get stuck so easily doing that. But most servers have the unstuck plugin now.

I'd say it's a bug. Blinking is something fairly new for hl, I bet the NS team had to do some heavy modifications to make it work at all, nevermind making it work properly.
Blinking 1.04-style was a novel idea, but the fact that it's getting altered in 1.1 (and is much more normal-movement-style there) indicates that the devs simply gave up getting it to work reliably. Blinking is probably best left to newer engines.
I wonder if it could have been designed as an ultra-fast grappling hook? As we've seen grappling hooks work in hl, just crank up the speed at which it shoots out and hauls you in to an extreme level? But they'd probably have thought of that.

IIRC the crouching part is to help with fitting your model into the spot you are blinking to. If any part of the model won't fit in the area you are trying to blink to, blink won't work. Crouching makes your model smaller.

If there is anything, anything in the way, it stops you there. This includes tiny bumps, so jumping and crouching gets you out of the way of anything that could be in the way (it doesn't stop you blinking, but it stops the blink there, if you know what i mean)

blink moves yer body in the direction of the crosshair till it collides with any world block (read real wall)

if you stand and blink 1 degree below horizontal youll start moving forward but yer feet hit the floor and you stop instantly, you get a no-motion blink.

jump, crouch to tighten up yer legs, and blink slightly above horizontal, and then assuming the hallway is wide and open enough youll end up at the end of it!

its easiest to use in really open rooms, like skipping the ladder in viaduct, you can tele right up twards the wall above the balcony.

im just beginning to get good enough to do tricks like blinking into the attics of powersilo and refinery!

blinkins is extra hard on eclipse, because every hallway has dumb little lumps on the walls and ceilings, so its especially difficult, however you CAN go from the marine start door right to their commchair

I never found blink exceptionally unreliable in eclipse. In fact, I've found it to be quite reliable on that map. In my opinion the hardest map to blink on is ns_nancy. I have found it nearly impossible to successfully blink in it's small corridors.

    Blink is buggy

Doesn't matter how you do it, it's buggy

If someone has a 100% method of blinking I won't believe you, so make a demo and post it

    console:

    record tinkywinky.dem

    afterwards type:

    stop

    in the console

    Cheers

Next time I'm fading I'll take you up on that... I've been meaning to record a blink demo to show people how cool it is. ;-)

Mind you, it's not 100% perfect, but it's reliable enough that I can dodge grenades, kill HAs without support, stuff like that. Marines can't kill something that teleports around the room and regenerates the entire time.

I'm not going to explain exactly, in detail, how blink works. I've done so at least three times already. If you want to know how blink works, how to use it, what its exact limitations are - do a search. Oh, and it's going to change in 1.1.

It relatively easy if you do know how it works

Just be sure to be in a room with open spaces and stuff....and no other chambers around

BTW,just aiming the crosshair above your target also works, its just buggy when you aim if straight at where you want to teleport

Me == Heavy blinking freak on crack

Another simple way to blink (not as quick as the crouch-jump method) is simply to crouch before blinking, aim up a little bit, hit blink, and only release the crouch button after you've blinked.

That's probably the easiest way to get it working, though as I said, it's not the quickest. It's a good place to start.

edit: oh, and so long as you aim up it works 100% of the time ThinG - I'll give you a demonstration (or tutorial) sometime on Roo's. *sticks his tongue out at ThinG*

Unnecessary hassle because you DON'T need to type ".dem" after your demo title.

blinking works only when you crouch and then blink. O_o...weird. also, i love blinking...expecially past marines and then stabbing them in the back.
    ...
blinking is evil though, try not to point above a hive and then blink. i did that once when i needed healing and blinked into the hive...not fun. and the only way to get out is suicide (kill).
