Completed My First Anime Series...

An oldie, but it was great
Finished watching Escaflowne earlier this morning, and wow - a great and touching tale. I get the feeling that good stories have a trend of becoming more weird and twisted because doing anything normal would be too cliche, but Escaflowne gave a traditional fantasy set story with a balanced mix of action & love, and did an outstanding job with it, a happy classic like The Princess Bride, or Final Fantasy VI. I dove in watching the series thinking that the ending had already been spoiled by my friends, ***spoiler*** they told me the series ended inconclusively with Van simply reuniting with his brother - I guess the TV channel that played it about a year ago never finished it... I feel like ruining it for them right now :p ***end spoiler. The only thing that sucked is that I accidentally watched part of it out of order (doh), and that it had to come to an end with some element of separation, the consequence of which I feel a sense of sadness - last time I felt that happened was with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - damn, and they were going to live clean too....
I'm also out of anime...
I think I'll check out Hellsing next from my friend, at least the focus on that is style over story, which also helps because my friends already showed me the ending, which thankfully doesn't ruin too much. I'll probably do RahXephon after.
In the meantime, I'm getting another cute story: Walt Disney's Bambi from Overnet... a time before the Disney as we now know went mad with power and commercialism.
*silence ensues*
What? Didn't YOU have a childhood?

That's the case with me, and none of my friends watch it, so I don't think I'll ever watch a full series.
Come to think of it, I don't think I've actually "finished" many TV show series; then again they usually just fade away from being secrely cancelled and you're left guessing if the show finally died after watching a second batch of reruns, not to mention that this can happen beyond twenty-six episodes, then you're just lost...
that was how i lost my anime virginity, but i haven't seen any others since.

Ouch. I still advocate Gunbuster (or Günnebüsta, as the japanese pronounce it) as the ultimate beginner series. Has only six episodes, so it won't break your budget, and it will prepare you for both casual nudity, short series AND final episodes that are in monochrome because funding ran out. 'Nuff said.
And if you want to cure someone of anime, make 'em watch the german-synchronized version of Armitage III. God, the voiceacting is so bad. BAD!
I watched them in english dub cause I HATE reading my movies and listening to gibberish at the same time. Hellsing MUST be watched in english!!!
I watch far far far far far too much anime for my own good. Yet i still find time to be on these forums, play NS and work on my map.
EDIT: I must stress i've watched ALL of the above in subtitle format. I hate dubs, i would cry if forced to watch them unless there was no alternative.
FLCL
otherwise, I'll smack you with mah bass
Evangelion subtitled? :/. Spike Spencer r0x0rs as Shinji
But yeah, for the most part anime's best in its native form. Especially Excel Saga (), My Neighbour Totoro, Spirited Away,.... I guess it makes more sense to mention the exceptions.
Anyway. Confuzor, I highly recommend that you see Neon Genesis Evangelion (and if you were thinking of seeing Serial Experiments: Lain, see it first. It's not as good, so it's better to see the better anime second ). NGE's an absolute masterpiece. It's the The Matrix of anime. And see it in English.
*SPOILER*
Not about Van and Hitomi but the whole fate machine thing. It just got too weird.
*End spoiler*
As far as series and movies I've watched...

All of Universal Century Gundam up to Zeta

Love Hina
Ah! My Goddess
Akira
Galaxy Express
Project A-Ko
Tenchi Muyo in Love
Several Tenchi Muyo series
Uh thats about all I can remember, but I've seen a lot more.
I've heard WAY too much about NGE...'s
ending
I actually introduced NGE to a friend from a music video; he's seen the entire series now. He says the starting episodes are great, but completely hates NGE due to the ending episodes and the finale. Though I must add, the rumors, gossip, and fiasco concerning the ending, (i.e., the death threats sent to the director, the rumor that the director was previously in an asylum, the "defense" by fans who stand true to NGE, especially its ending) have highly amused me.
When I asked my friend who "won" in the end of the series (God, or the human race), he simply told me:
"No one! Shinji screwed them all!" - endings akin to the Outer Limits bother the HELL out of me, and the sounds of NGE's ending seems to go beyond that, so I'm a tad bit intimidated by it.
My friend considers RahXephon superior to NGE, and when asked about the ending of that series, he says it's not traumatizing like NGE's ending, so I think I'll try out RahXephon for now.
through a straw
its kinda slow, but its on the level psychologicially of matrix 1.

Same with me.
I tried to watch it once but I usually end up going "Why does she need to be naked?" and "Why is it only 12 year old girls can pilot robots in skimpy clothes?"
LMAO!
Has lots of Greek Mythology references. Not the greatest of things out there but it was my first manga dvd I bought. The story makes you think.
/me thinks of End Of Evangelion

Gah! It MUST be MINE! I've always wanted to watch Those Who Hunt Elves, but I've never seen it anywhere.
And I'll join your "dub-hate" club any day. Especially since dubbings are standard-fare here in Germany. With most series, you have to buy DVDs if you want the original language.

I saw that a few days ago. Somewhat disappointing, but at least I had been prepared. Rumors say that the comics will have yet a different ending. Let's lower our heads and pray.
That was the first feature length anime i ever bought on vhs. Masamune Shirow. Before that all i had bought was New Dominion Tank Police, another of Masamune Shirow's work
Oh, and i was reading Black Magic M-66 manga in Manga Mania (before it's unfortunate demise).
I'm a bit of a Masamune Shirow fan
i look for really short anime series.. because i don't have really the time to watch em all these days. hellsing, ah my goddess, and onegai teacher are short series and are okay..
i just borrowed the whole cowboy bebop series on dvd.. something to watch each night after work and before i go to sleep. bleh, i'm probably not even going to remember it after i watch the whole thing. falling asleep and what not. -.,-
And just as some kind of basis, the full series' I've seen are Love Hina, Angelic Layer, and Chobits, and I'm currently working my way through Cowboy Bebop, Berserk, Excel Saga, Lain, and Rah'Xephon. and probably a couple more, I can't remember.
(Screams, electrical sounds, sound of flesh ripping and burning.)
"Pika, pika, CHUUUUuuuuuuuu"
OK let me rephrase what I just said.
Evangelion as a series was great. Superb. Amazing etc etc. However, or little friend EoE came along. And it sucked. Everyone goes on about the superb animation and so on and so forth but the film lacked its Evangelion-ness. It was no longer Eva it was just a group of characters we know in a location we know and the end of the world. It sucked and felt like a cheap tie in rather than a conclusion to the series which is should have been. Instead of AKIRA's "Oh wow that was cool and a little freaky" or Ghost In The Shells "Neat" EoE gave a "Great so this happened and stuff. I want my wasted time back!"
Its worth watching for two parts then it gets lame. (The two points mentioned are {WARNING SPOILERS!!!} The JSSDF attack on NERV and Asuka kickin rump. But apart from that meh)
Evil! Must...resist...Urge...to....destroy...evil!!!!!

I saw the first episode of it...and frankly, it looked decent but I never got a chance to watch the rest of it.
Saw some misc. shows/movies from across A-Z... not every letter though. Ghost in the Shell had nice plot, but the ending was like "WTH!?! IS THAT IT?!? WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THIS?!? ME MUST KNOW!!!1"
Some anime is like "Why is [this person] doing/acting/looking like [this]?" and "Where am i getting taken with this plot?" ... Sailor Moon was like that; "Where the hell are the creators going with this plot?" And "How do they know all those moves when they never really knew them until that point and time!?" and lets not forget "Why the skimpyness (or absence) of clothing [here, there, and everywhere else]?" I remember reading something that a extra amount of paint was added to make the skirt's lenth longer for... obvious reasons.
Thats another thing, when it gets translated and stuff to be brought over here (where ever "here" is for you) some things are purposly taken out; IE: Masses of swearing (Dragon Ball Z comes to mind; there's some places where some nice insults could've been put in), partial or full nudity, gore and violence (hey, where'd that scar come from? it wasn't there last episode) and ... skimpyness of clothing...
Thats why i like Gundam Wing; you know where its going like someone's gonna die, yeah, but its a fight against a known entity and to establish something; not just a "Fight against evil" plot. Also you can tell that the people have had some training, so they already know those moves instead of the "OK! Ill do all these complex motions and say this massive list of words in this order to..." thingy that seems to happen in 8/10 animes...
The battles and sounds in Gundam Wing are nice, too. (main reason why i watched it)

*NGE SPOILERS AHEAD*
The last few episodes and the finale are the whole point of the series. It's one of those animes which lulls you into a false sense of security and then wierds you out and makes you go "NOOO! They can't do THAT!". I loved it. Then there's the whole psychological thing.
Sure the ending was confusing. I haven't heard anything about this rumours crap. One theory (I'll call it a theory, although the person who told me it swore it to be the truth) is that the last two episodes actually mirror the events of the movies, from Shinji's internal perspective, which makes a lot of sense.
*shrug* each to their own. I thought it was fantastic.
