Problems With Icons

In every version of Windows I've ever used, there is a recurring problem where a desktop icon will randomly and inexplicably change to a different, seemingly random, icon. For instance, right now my icon for Samurai is the CS icon (an omen?). This doesn't happen often, and isn't really a major problem, but it's confusing and irritating. Is there a way to prevent this?

I'm running XP Home right now, but it's happened on 98SE and 95 too if I recall correctly.

I used to get that in 98, but only on my QuickLaunch bar. I've never seen it in XP. Pro. Odd.

ive seen it in XP Pro. It seems the longer I go without a reboot, the more it happens *shrug*

Set your options to show hidden files. Then go to C:\Windows and look for a file called Shelliconcache - as in Shell Icon Cache. Erase it and restart your comp. Problem solved!

Unfortunately every so often, and I've not worked out why, it returns.

Reboot? Like I said, its been around 3 months since I rebooted. I run windows till it falls over dead. I got 98SE for just over a month once
I usually just mash F5 some, and curse a little, and its usually fixed in a day or two.

Why do you constantly leave your computer on?

Time for this thing to log into windows each boot would drive me nuts. I have 15 icons on the bottom right, and I use every single one of em :/ It would take a year for this thing to get fully running again on reboot. IRC doesnt save some stuff (placement of windows and such), photoshop is always running with my current work in it, etc etc. It would just be a 10 minute load hassle each time, and Im impatient!

Yeah, I tend to leave my computer running for weeks at a time. Generally something comes up where I have to restart it at some point so I never manage a month, but who knows. I've found that if I go into a game (like HL, for instance) that removes all the icons and then has to refresh the desktop it fixes the problem, but it's still irritating.
