<div class="IPBDescription">swear to god, weirdest</div> Hey guys, I was browsing around some websites today and happened to spot a link for a bandwidth provider advertising unmetered access. So like the cheapskate I am I decided to at least check out their website. It was .....

<a href='http://www.rackforce.com' target='_blank'>http://www.rackforce.com</a>

Now, their services weren't as low-cost as I had hoped but I decided to check out the list of features they offered on virtual hosting to see if it at least supported PHP and SQL. So I go and click this link that says "Click Here for a complete list of features" and I go to this page with a table like I'm expecting to see. When all the sudden a popup starts loading. At this point I wanted to know what advertising they did on a webspace provider so I decided to let it load.

I get this little window with two text fields in it, one big and one small. In the big one I see some text pop up.....

"Doug4389: Welcome to rackforce :-)"

The name might not have been Doug4389, but it was something along those lines. So I thought this was just another advertising popup that was trying to get my attention, so I play along and type "Is this for real ?" in the little textbox and hit send, fully expecting to see a list of special deals come flying back at me. Instead I get...

"Doug4389: Absolutely :-o"

IT WAS A REAL FRIGGIN PERSON!!!

Basically he started asking me questions about what I was looking for and all that and we talked a bit. But that's beside the point. My point is that this site is so dedicated to service that they have a person chat with you LIVE while you look around.

It might not have been the weirdest net experience ever for some of you, but it definetly got my attention. Just thought I'd share

To think, some poor techs have to camp the website monitoring doohickey all day...

I have my browser configured to block interaction attempts from other humans <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

@ spinnahost we do this with PHPLive, its great fun when your bored poping up windows to unsuspecting viewers, or to people who have been on the site for quite some time.

if you are after a good host, you might want to:
    a) look over @ <a href='http://www.webhostingtalk.com' target='_blank'>http://www.webhostingtalk.com</a>
    b) stay away from "unmetred" providers, someone has to pay for it along the line, and they are assuming that a few people will take advantage, and most will just use some pathetic amount < 100gb. You think about it, quality bandwidth costs about USD70.00-100.00/mbit (320mbytes), Lousy bandwidth costs under USD40.00/mbit. Your likely to get bandwidth like cogent from such providers. For those who dont know, cogent is despised as it reguarly provides hours downtime <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

My server co. has some thing similar. When you go to the support page they have a java window that lets you talk to a support person real time. I think all web co. should have this feature. I was very impressed.

That might be true but my ns server has been on a cognet line for the last 4 months and has had only 1 downtime issue with a router, and that lasted 3 hours.

pure cogent, or mixed? we were thinking of mixing cogent with some other providers to keep uptime + low bandwidth cost but decided not to.

and as to the "unmetred" connections at rackforce... they have unmetred on a 1.5mbit (480gb) connection, which is just what you would get at Two_a_t, rackshack, dedicated now, etc
