Everyone was new once
Heya NS fans,
Lately, the forums have been getting a little, well, snooty. People have tended to reply a bit more condescendingly, or perhaps treat new players with less respect then they are due. There's also been a tendency to try and moderate threads by people who aren't mods. And there've been too many flamewars, by NS forum standards.
This needs to be stopped pronto.
A lot of effort has been spent in the NS community to keep it very friendly, social, and PG. We want our forums, channels, and servers to be a refuge from the majority of the online world where anarchy reigns, and admins are nowhere to be seen. We can only do this with YOUR help.
In the next few weeks, the countdown to NS 1.1 is going to begin. This means that the publicity campaign is going to swing into high gear. All those screenshots, movies, battlefield stories, and the rest are going to bring a lot of new faces into the NS community. A lot of new faces that are not NS experts, who have not been playing since October 2002, have not been following the mod since July 2001. Basically, a lot of 'newbies'.
These players are what will keep NS alive!
They need to be welcomed, and treated with patience and respect. Again - patience and respect. This means that when someone asks some silly question for the 20th time that day, and you have nothing good to say, then you have no reason to post. First impressions are what counts in the online world, and if the first response someone gets to 'how do I evolve into an Onos?' is 'SUYF read the manual, n00b!' then that player is likely never to ask anything again. You and the NS team cannot afford for this to happen.
So, on behalf of the dev team, the mods, and the ops, I am asking you think before you post that flame. My moderators have also been told that we're tightening up, and they are going to enforce this new mindset with extreme force if necessary. This means you will get a thread lock and a PM if we find you getting out of hand. Then a temp ban. Then you will be gone forever. We don't want to ban anyone, but this is what it will take to maintain the peace and goodwill in here, we will.
That's all. Please make sure your friends and mates read this post (it will be stickied in a while). Ignorance will not be an excuse.
Thanks, and get ready for NS 1.1. It's going to be affecting your grades and work performance sooner than you think!

Rofl yeah the flapping scorpian, but the only problem is that it would have to be sicked and most of us forget to read the sicked topics, even i forget to look at them sometimes so if the topic was sicked then perhaps it could be in a different colour? to catch the eyes?
That'd be a simple enough little thing, and hopefully people would visit the link. It's better than simply linking the new player forum, because in all honesty when someone's just installed a new gme they wouldn't want to trawl through a whole forum - they'd want to get stuck in.
---
Heck, include the FAQ in the installer, even.
I too find it so anoying when newbies are being flammed at because other players just don't want them around. We were all newbies. Back then, if we stoped playing NS because of what other players had said, then NS would simply die !
I think we need to do more than just treat the newbies like anyone else, we also need to go the extra mile to help them out, give them advice, and that's what I'm seeing more and more of here (though that's not saying newbies still get flamed, that needs to stop). There's a lot of new modelers, ayumbre's one of them I've noticed, that have a lot of potential. Now we need to help, persuade them to learn, answer questions, whatever. But understand now we can't hold hands with some of these people, so sometimes a simple "Read the guide, noob" is going to have to work.
well... I still remember those days where NS was released just some days ago, and some people called other people "n00b" because nearly no one wanted to play kharaa
that was really funny
But whatever. I say, who gives a damn.
I say help noobs with simple stuff, but if they ask too much, leave them to figure it out.
-but-
i can't remember how many times i've answered that question.
asking doesn't hurt, it's ignoring the answer... and asking again that does.
i've always wanted to be a mod, but then again, i lack the reservation to NOT reply to those flames... but monse, i'll try extra hard, just for you...
(*idea*) T2K "MIGHT" put up that most asked questions page you guys want... n00b traffic > "Elite" traffic (the elites know where to go )
and monse, do you have an e-mail that wont bounce back? i've got some things i need to talk to you about (like coil says to me ALL the time)
What would be great is if a few of the veterans of NS could idle in there to answer the questions of nubs patiently and succinctly around the release date of 1.1. I know there are a lot of decent and intelligent NS players out there.
Be forewarned though, any offensive behavior will be dealt with on a two strike policy. A kick or a timeban for your first offence, a permban for your second. Of course it all depends of the severity of the infraction.

P.S. I must confess to a bit of elitism on my behalf ingame occasionally. Like when I build a movement chamber on our first hive the team usually screams "WTH ARE YOU DOING YOU IDIOT NEWBIE!?!?!eleven!one!!". I usually say "Just try it for once hey nubs?". They usually reply with "NUB!? I'VE BEEN PLAYING SINCE BETA ONE!!!". I laughed long and hard over voicecomm.
"I don't mind fools, a fool can be taught and helped. Pompous fools on the other hand... People that say they know everything when, in fact, they know nothing. These people cannot be helped because they aren't willing to accept it." (A rough quote from memory)
And yes, Richard Feynman is my idol. ^_^
