Adjusting To College

Have you done?
Its the middle of summer, but I leave for lovely Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY in just 2 short months, August 31. Its a small school (about 4,000 undergrads) and most of the kids are from New England. I'm a little bit of an outsider in that I'm from the Philadelphia area, and I only know of 1 other person from my area thats going. I've heard all the guidance office crap about adjusting to college and making friends and classes and all that. A good chunk of the NS community is in college or are college graduates. I'm just curious as to what your freshman college experience was like. Was it hard meeting people? Roommates from hell? Party memories better left in the alcoholic cavities of your brain? :-P

My plan of attack was to leave my dorm room open while I'm in there the first week and just play X-Box. Invite some guys in and go from there. Never underestimate the bonding power of Halo...

I'd suggest getting a dorm with a cool friend. ^_^ Me and my friend, when we pimp college, we'll be in the same dorm, hopefully get his brother's house near the college.

"It all depends on how you handle things with what you have"

My so-called "t00lz" that has helped me and still is helping me through college.

    1. I have a house 3 blocks away from college (this is very very helpful in many ways)

    2. A decent car (this is kinda silly for me since i can practically walk to school but it does help you look "cooler")

    Enough with the "t00lz"....

Here are a few tips you might consider:

Don't be a smart-****, a jerk, an **** or anything bad to anyone, ANYONE, on your first few weeks in college. The last thing you need is an "enemy" in your early stages. Be polite to EVERYONE. Even to the retards that usually don't get any respect. You need all the friends you can get when your new.

I will probably edit this later when i think of some more tips

PS: When i went to college, i didn't know anyone. Not even one person. (im still a freshman, incoming sophomore)

Not really respectful if you call them that.

well we had it easy, the dorm was about 600 same age guys from around the country all new and all scared (although no one would admit that, the first few days out of your parents house IS weird)

and we had an "open door policy" so we would all kinda get to know each other and now my wing, all 20 or so guys are good friends, and we're all applying for the same floor in the sophomore dorm now

As far as the amount of work and the hardness of the work you do in college, for the most part its pretty comparable with high school. All the high school people try to scare the crap out of you as if you'll spend 36 hours a day writing papers, but really I think its only like that if you're going to grad school. I actually spend less time working on class related stuff in college than I ever did in high school. And the language arts teachers are much much easier to please to boot.

As far as the social aspect of college goes, I'm probably not the best to ask about that. I haven't made a new friend in 4 years. Bleh.

All in all, I hate college, but not as much as I hated high school.

Sorry to threadsurrect a dead topic, but I just have to say that if you let it, your freshman year in college with absolutely pwn.

Don't let it freak you out, the last thing you need is lots of stress. I agree that you should keep your door open, but I dunno if you should be playing X-Box all the time. Put up some interesting posters on your wall. If you need suggestions, I recommend Van Gogh's "Starry Night" or Klimt's "The Kiss". Sure, they're overdone, but I guarantee you that girls will come in and talk to you about them. Unless your room smells.

Which leads me to another thing. Dorm rooms smell funny. All of them, I imagine it's from the carpet never being significantly cleaned in the complete existance of the building. So get an air freshener.

Also keep in mind what homerx said usually applies to everyone. Most everyone's on their best behavior for the first few weeks of their freshman year. What this means is that you can go meet them without fear of them being rude or mean to you or whatever. So not only should you keep your door open, but you should also meet other people and drop by their rooms again if you think they're interesting.

I'm about to go into my last year at Bezerkeley, and it still pwns! College rules.
