Looks like it's going to be a neck and neck release - or at least a cut throat . We'll see how PS3 does this time without a cartload of games to compete against the Xbox1, the way it went down last time...

Microsoft will deliver the next version of its Xbox game console in 2006, CEO Steve Ballmer said.
According to reports by Japanese newspaper Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Ballmer made the remark during a press conference in Japan. Many had expected the new Xbox to arrive a year earlier.

Microsoft representatives refused to confirm the 2006 date. "No date has been announced for future Xbox products or services," the company said in a statement. "Our executives often talk about the future in terms of vision and the possibilities of technology. This is what allows us to be innovative as a company."

Game consoles typically run on a five-year life cycle, which means market leader Sony would be due to replace its PlayStation 2 in 2005.

But Sony executives, while refusing to make any commitments for a PS2 successor, have indicated that the Cell processor expected to power the PlayStation 3 is taking longer to develop than expected. Sony also recently announced an interim update to the PS2, the PSX home-entertainment appliance, that should add some new life to the brand, according to Peter Glaskowsky, editor in chief of industry newsletter Microprocessor Report.

"PSX is intended to gain them some time," Glaskowsky said, adding that a version of the PS2 that supports high-definition TV sets is also likely. "They have a lot of products they can introduce between now and the PS3."

With Sony easing off the accelerator on the PlayStation 3, Microsoft can afford another year to try to squeeze a profit out of the money-losing Xbox, said Michael McConnell, an analyst for Pacific Crest Securities.

"I think that's exactly what's going on--Microsoft has gotten an indication PS3 is going to be a 2006 time frame, and they're taking their cue from there," McConnell said. "I would have expected Microsoft might have tried to front-run them and beat them to the market, but I guess they don't think that's necessary."

The extra year also gives Microsoft more time to negotiate with suppliers, including graphics-chip makers Nvidia and ATI Technologies. Nvidia supplies the graphics processor--the most expensive component in the console--for the current Xbox, but ATI has said it would like to grab the next generation.

McConnell said ATI is likely to win, due partly to lack of interest from Nvidia, which endured months of messy contract arbitration and inventory headaches last year because of the Microsoft contract.

"Nvidia has really given a lot of signals...that they're trying to distance themselves from Xbox2," McConnell said. "That relationship has really soured over the last year...Microsoft in general is just not a very nice partner to deal with. I think the whole experience left Nvidia with a bad taste in their mouth."

ATI will probably be more flexible than Nvidia, McConnell said, but the graphics-chip underdog is still likely to insist on a contract that shields it from Nvidia's experiences, when lagging Xbox sales and a sudden change in the console's configuration left the chipmaker with piles of unsold and unusable merchandise.

"They'll probably have a royalty arrangement, where they don't have some of the inventory risks," McConnell said.

Glaskowsky said Nvida and ATI have an equal chance of getting the deal for the next Xbox, as both will draw from Nvidia's experiences and insist on similar contract terms.

"Microsoft is going to have to make sure that whoever they partner with is going to be happy with the deal," Glaskowsky said.

Glaskowsky added that the Xbox experience hasn't been entirely negative for Nvidia. The design of the Xbox chip was the foundation for nForce, Nvidia's foray into chipsets, PC components that combine graphics with control of basic PC functions.

"Nvidia wouldn't have the nForce products if it wasn't for the Xbox," Glaskowsky said.

    I don't understand Microsoft.

They lose something like $150 per Xbox they make / sell. And they're thinking a second one is financially viable?
  • tbZBeAsttbZBeAst Join Date: 2003-01-26 Member: 12755Members
Yes. They'll be hoping that AT LEAST all the owners of the Xbox will upgrade.
Also even though the original is not profitable, it has given them a credible brandname in a market dominated by long-standing collossii. Lets face it, MS isn't really going to be bothered long term about Xbox1 being a financial drain (thats if they even spot the drop in their financial ocean.....) if xbox2 bombs too, they may take more notice.

Remember all the development costs of the xbox 1 will be absorbed by its sales. Xbox2 can build on they technology of 1 and vastly reduce dev costs.

Still, theres not a whole lot of titles that make you want to go out and buy an Xbox. RPGs? I dont even think Xbox has one.. if it does correct me. Wow uh its got Halo and Halo2... and uh.. lots of sports games which can be bought on other consoles. And a downloadable graphics card.

RPG, most of them are just adventure games, of course this depends on how you define the RPG Genre - for me it's a adventure game with Stats...

i'd say Baldurs Gate and DX2 is the only RPG there i recognize...

The main problem with the Xbox is that, essentially, there are no appealing games. To myself at least, and the vast number of people that haven't been buying the console. And anything worth paying for is available for other platforms (MGS2 and Splinter Cell, for example). Nintendo went the route of having pretty much only exclusive titles, and look where it's got them. Yeah, they may be legendary, but how many actually bothered to waste their money on a gamecube. Though saying that, depending on how the new FF game (GC exclusive) turns out, i may invest. Heh.

Microsoft is one of the biggest powers of the computer industry, although Bill doesn't make his quota of 2 billion a day he wants to try and consume the console gaming industry with XBOX. Personally I like XBOX it is kinda fricking huge but if they get that down in XBOX 2 then it should be fine.

But the console that will and always will be the best is: Jaguar, the first gaming console before Atari and Nintendo

Scroll down a bit, you should find Morrowind, which is more of an RPG than both of those games put together, although its not exclusive, which defeats the point, as the PC version is ten times better (mods to the power of ten!), but those two games aren't exclusive either, so its still pointless.

::Esuna::... Who would buy a GameCube? Anyone with a fully working brain and a need for a console, thats who, as its currently the best one.

    Pikmin pwns you...

    so does metroid...

    and mario...

    and zelda...

    they all pwn you!

i'm saying this cuz i bought one. i don't regret it either. xbox doesn't have a lot going for it. it seemed like something microsoft just wanted to do cuz they want to do everything. i didn't find it that special. as for playstation, eh... couldn't care less. altho i've never owned a PS... maybe that's why i don't care? well, there's just a few games that i really like on it (PS1 btw, not really PS2), like metal gear solid. that game owns all! but that's coming out for gamecube anyway (yeah, i'm gonna buy it. i loved it for PS1. i started playing it at 8 pm one night, and finished it at 10 the next morning. no sleep. at all. )

but who needs consoles? i think EVERY game should be ported to PC. i just like em better. cuz then all you'd need to invest in is a stable machine, a controller (for fighting games and others that are awkward with mice/keyboard) and a joystick (for flight sims). that's my dreamboat right there

Did I miss something? Wasn't that the Atari Jaguar, which came after the 2600?

Yeah, they should combine powers. That way everyone wins! You don't have to go out and buy an X-Box/PS2/NGC just to get a few good games. You save atleast $400 right there!
