A Poll (nearly)

<div class="IPBDescription">I can't post a poll apparantly</div> Ok,

I'm sure some of you are aware of my desire to get the discussion forum reopened. I really enjoyed the cut and thrust of intellectual debate. (in as far as it went). It was closed down due to topics straying from the original point and disappearing off into semi-personal attacks ( to paraphrase MonsE).

I'm sure I'm not alone in wanting it reopened. I know that starting a petition here is unlikely to achieve anything in real terms, it can, after all be ignored. This aint a democracy, people. It will give MonsE an idea of the numbers that want it back though.

As an aside, could it be made permissions based? I.e. a poster could have access removed if they get too personal, or offensive?

In summary, those that want the discussion forum reopened, please rely here, and (keeping it sensible) make your feelings known.

Someone clear something up for me....

What is the difference between the discussion forums and the off topic?

The discussion board was meant to discuss serious goings-on in the world such as wars, politics and so on. With constructive arguments of course. Which in turn failed and turned into flame wars...

"serious goings-on in the world such as wars, politics and so on" will fit nicely in the Off topic, wouldn't it?

    Quoting the rules.

"Forum closed until after 1.1 release, or more likely forever. It is now read-only. Attempts to use the off-topic section as a discussion forum will result in moderator wrath."

    korrekt, hence the topic.

I can see that the pause on the bug forum is a good idea, I just don't know how waiting until 1.1 is going to help the discussions

Well what harm would come from starting a forum thread about say... the Iraqi War.

Oops! I said a bad thing!

    /me runs away

There's some internal discussion (oh, the irony) about Disc.s future. We know many want it back - just let it rest until further notice, please.

In thinking of what Nem 0 just said, I think that if the forum should be reopned, then there would have to much stricter enforcment in that area. Just as MonsE said. Maybe one of the mods should be the Discussion forum policeman lol. It would be a full time job.

Either way, some may call it sensorship, I would refer to it as like a full time swear filter. A flame filter lol.

That forum was always intellectualy simulating but there were always those certain individuals who would contribut something more then just their opinion on the matter.

Everytime MonsE has to close the discussion forum, a little piece of him dies. It takes exponentially longer to regain that piece.

Don't get me wrong, I liked the discussion forum, and I liked seeing people discuss things maturely, but I've learned something in my past 2-3 years with this community that some of you might not grasp yet...

People on these forums can discuss anything maturely and logically for as long as their opinions go unquestioned. The exact second that someone criticizes their ideas/opinions, they fly into a defensive rampage that always results in personal attacks, and degrades from there. I've had one saying that has gone unchallenged here. Give people here an oppurtunity to dissapoint you, and they will not fail... if they don't dissapoint you, give it time, and they will.

Am I the only one who didn't think the discussion forums were that bad? For the most part people were civil(half of the flames came straight outa MonsE anyway), and when they weren't the mods were quick and efficient in their wrathage, I for obe would love to see them come back. I like dem.

At this point in time, access permissions in Invision cannot be adjusted for one individual user, only groups. The next major version (v1.2) is supposed to have individually-assignable permissions, however.

    It'd certainly be nice to have a discussions forum which is invite-only once IPBv1.2 is released. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Thanks for that Sycophant.

Ok, I'll respect the Mod's decisions. I'm glad that it's still a topic of debate.

I think Spyder is partially correct. You will get people who react to an argument with vitriol. I think this is a function of being removed from actually speaking to the guy you're replying to (then again maybe not). I don't want to accidentally argue the forum into oblivion, but overcoming that sort of reaction is a function of maturity and experience. As much as you get people learning from making those kind of errors and sticking to the rules, you will get new entrants to the topic that won't, and will fly off the handle. If you need someone to police that kind of reaction, and take the burden from MonsE......*twirls nightstick*........

*impassioned* To deny our discussion forum is to deny what makes us human. Without a way of interacting on a cerebral level, we are reduced to making a bunch of Hovar jokes. Do you really want that? I believe that deep down even MonsE misses the forum.

    We await your decision.

We who are about to die SALUTE YOU!
