Final Fantasy!
<div class="IPBDescription">/ <- a beating stick \_/ <- a dead horse</div> Yeah, i'm sure it's been done, but after loading up FFX for the first time in months, I felt I had to.... share.
This post is to discuss all things final fantasy. I don't claim to be a great fan of final fantasy having only played (and completed) FF8 and 10. Also, pls don't post any FF7 or 9 spoilers as I'm planning to buy both of them as soon as I can find em in a 2nd hand store (I already found out by accident that Aeris dies, YOU FORUM B*****DS!).
This thread contains FFX and 8 spoilers. I know thats hypocritical of me after saying I don't want any 7 or 9 spoilers, but this is MY post, MINE I SAY! MWAHAAHAA!! So i can do what I want. (unless I do something to warrent moderator intervention of course....)
Now for the discussion starter: Did FFX suck?
If you've played it through to the end, you might say "YES", and I admit the ending sucks. And confused me. As far as I understood it; When Zanarkand was wiped out, the suvivors became Fayth.
Tidus (or whatever you called him) was an aeon. All those Fayth around Zanarkand were doing the summoning, and they chose him since he was the one they all remembered most, him being a Blizball star and all.
Same goes for Jecht, but he became Sin, since he was the final aeon that killed the last sin (Yu Yevon, who is inside Sin, can "junction" [for lack of a better word] himself to other aeons, and the aeon becomes sin)
This begs the question: Why didn't the Fayth just stop summoning Jecht when he became Sin? That would have saved a lot of trouble. And I know that they COULD choose to stop summoning, since thats what happens at the very end: the aeons can rest at last, and all 'die'. How sad.
The other question is: if the first Sin was a weapon used by Bevelle against Zanarkand (Yu Yevon was from Bevelle, hence Bevelle is never destroyed by Sin), then how come in the first FMV we see Sin destroying Zanarkand, when there is no hint of a war going on? It also states at one point that Sin was used to 'finish off' Zanarkand, not right at the start, which would explain why there is no hint of a war.
I have just gone on about a load of bullplop for a long time. You will reply. Resistance is futile.
If you don't want to talk about FFX, tell me which one was the best, and why. (most people seem to think 7). Also tell me why most people think 8 sucks. I liked it!

(how the fudge are you supposed to pronounce that anyway?? "final fantasy ten two???", "X-2" sounds a little better)
When i say £15, i actually bought a PSX on the same day purely so i could play it, so the whole thing set me back around £60.
All this junctioning crap and jobs just annoys the hell out of me.
As for Final Fantasies, you really had to start from the beginning to get the kind of drive necessary to beat a game that takes a minimum of 20 hours to beat. The original was cool b/c you could choose your characters, then work with what you had. Then the next one for the US was FF2(4), which was a fun change in the pace of the ff series. FF3(6) continued 2's tradition, only bringing back the appearance of choice in which characters to use. 7.. I wouldn't know, I haven't played any past that for more than 5 hours. But yeah, if you started from the beginning, it becomes obvious that the first time around you won't get everything; that's what you save for the second run-through.
Plus, Chrono Trigger bests the fighting systems of 7, 8, 9,and X anyway, so la-dee-da.
Secret of Mana > Chrono Trigger > Final Fantasy
Real-time ring systems = pwn
Secret of Mana > Chrono Trigger > Final Fantasy

heh, i thought i was the only one...
Ive only ever owned 7 through 10...
completed 7, 9 and 10... never even got to disc four on 8 <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo--> ....got most of the characters to lvl100 tho <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
Unfortunatly, when i sold my PS1... i lost 7 thru 9... ( i never got a PS2 till a couple months later... really must buy them back tho <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->)
FF7 was, imo the best level up system (i also like the way inactive characters - those not in your party - leveled up at the same time...just slower). The story was good aswell... Brilliant life span - originally completed it in 3 days (not straight - total time) but when i went back through... i clocked up over 140 hours on it...took FOREVER for materia to grow (best magic system aswell)
FF8 - good graphics (for PS1 anyway), okish story... good lifespan.. was brilliant for those days i had off school - Magic system was a pain in the **** when you had 100 of the best spells, but couldnt use em, due to junctions.
FF9 - was different.... Good story/graphics... was a bit easy to follow the game through tho... and to get all of the stuff (cept the mini game - not spoiling it here)
FFX - Liked the graphics... and the fact characters finally had voices albeit a big crappy voice acting... and synching...
The sphere grid level up was a bit tricky to get used to - i dived right in on Expert grid - and is hard to get the Sigil for unlocking Wakka's ultimate weapon fully... (must.....play.....blitzball..... so boring tho.. i win every game atleast 6 - 0 ... every goal from Tidus... Jehct Shot rules... <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->). The life span is good, as while the story is short, and easy enough to complete in 3 days of playing (i was off school, sick - had not much else to do... or was it exam study leave? pfft, who cares, i was skiving anyway), there are a lot of side quests, and other things to do... Ive had the game over a YEAR and im still going... altho not played it much recently... got about 115 hours clocked.. (i managed over 100 hours on em all <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->) - btw, i could kill the last bosses (Braska's Aeon 1 and 2, and Yu Yevon, in a total of 5 hits... and thats not even FULL stats... - Khimarhi, Yuna and Tidus are my strongest characters.... in that order.. Ive completed the entire grid for Khimarhi and Yuna, but not Tidus yet... got a 1/3 left yet)
As for FFX-2... i WILL be getting that, purely just to see what its like.... (and i like FF games <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->)
Sometimes, when I went back to playing 7 after 10, I wanted to scream--Cloud looked like a friggin triangle for the whole game.
FF7 - for one of the ealier PS1 games the graphics are decent. The magic/materia system is excellent, Summons are excessively long. (Badly in need of condensed ones)
The story is VERY easy to follow, and falls short after the first disk.
FF8 - More realistic style then FF7, the junction system doesnt work too well and doesnt allow you to customize your characters as much as you should.
FF9 - Back to the classics <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> The sphere/ability system works well, and the graphics are excellent. (For a PS1 game anyway)
FFX - Didnt get to far till i lost interest, but I cant stress how much Blitzball SUCKS. Its so stat oriented that it doesnt even feel like a sport.
If I pass the ball BACKWARDS to a player with more stamina, How can the Guard in front of me catch it? Somehow they do, it doesnt make any sense.
The best FF was FF6 (FF3 American) and not to mention the best game in existence, any die hard FF fan will tell you the same. FF7 was the best of the PC/PS ones which is probable not saying much but considering how many people have never seen an SNES these days let alone played one that's the way it is.
FF7 was good a game by any standards but was dissapointing as the first follow up in years and even more so considering it followed FF6, but like I said it's still a good game. FF8-FFX + should just drop the FF name cause its getting sad.
FF Chronicles for the gamecube is a beacon of hope for me and might restore my faith in square, we shall see.
Edit: FF9 wasn't so bad, I haven't played all of it so can't give a full review, but it seemed more like an apology for FF8.
PS: Eye candy is the bane of any true FF fan, that's why FFX is the devil.
FF8 was rather flat with its characters and story (okay the first disk was good storywise). Junctions work in theory not in practice. The "check is in the mail" cash system was a breath of fresh air (no longer kill stuff make cash).
FF9 I didn't play much. It has potential though (unless Kuja is as bad storywise as I fear).
FFX is a good game. The sphere grid is unusual level-up system that works. The voice acting is what you'll expect for a game. The weapon/shield upgrade system didn't work for me (find rare crud for Max powerozr!). Btilzball wins the award for "worst minigame ever" with its poor intro, overuse of AI, the constant talking about it as the greatest thing ever, etc. As I say, "they play it for remind themselves there are worst things than Sin." The best part of FFX is the "Corpsman Up!" battle system. Call in whoever you want whenever you want gives you great potential for tactics and specialization.
Don't forget Final Fantasy I, btw.
FF7 is also extremely good, albeit sad in many ways... i wont spoil it <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
I haven't played any of the PS Chrono Trigger related games tho...
edit: FF2 was also worth playing.

Yeah, and not to mention the Weapons. Ohh, man, I loved fighting Emerald Weapon over and over, that guy is insane!
