No, this isn't a tribute to Sheena.

Maus is probably going to be a little upset when I post this, but I've been trying to get a sheen like effect on the knife with the new transparency dlls. I personally got the idea from the DoD forums from a guy named Podunkian, but Maus said he had the idea first. Even then there is probably somebody out there who figured it out before both of them, so who gives a crap.

This is far from perfect. It actually looks strange, but I'd be interested to hear some opinions and suggestions for improvements.

The idle animations are set to flourish for show. This isn't functional, so backup your default model before installing this. This is not a release.

Okay, so. To be able to get feedback, I have to tell people what I did. Basically, this is similar to how cell shading is done. You create a duplicate of the mesh slightly larger than the original so that it overlaps it completely. In cell shading you would flip all the faces now, but instead we don't do that here. We just set a dark chrome like additive texture onto the duplicate. The thing that makes it cool is, the texture is actually set to chrome. So now you've got a translucent chrome like texture over the blade. Then it's a matter of compiling. Nothing really complicated here.

I think I made the duplicate a little thick, but only because I wanted to cover the whole thing. I was being lazy. I could have done a better job, but that would have taken more time. What I'm trying to say is, don't knock it for that, this is only a test.

The way the additive rendering works is it takes the darker colour and makes it more transparent. White would be opaque. What you should actually see is the second layer, which is the original knife blade, which is white.

HLMV doesn't do transparent rendering yet.

The chrome effect has always worked in half-life.

I'm going to turn in now, so you get those dlls working.

    Edit:

Okay, download those DLLs from the link I posted above and overwrite the existing files of the same name somewhere in your half-life directory. Backup everything. I don't want you blaming me for anything.

You're still looking at it in HLMV, it won't work. Here, I'll get a screenshot. Maybe this was your clever plot from the beginning? In that case, you have bested me, Spawn!

Screenshot uptop, that's what it should look like with properly working transparency code. The screenshot takes a little away from it. Because you don't get to see the way the lighting changes as you move around the map.

I thought you said you were going to reanimate it or something, i know jamil modeled and skined it.
  • JamilJamil Join Date: 2002-11-02 Member: 4829Members
That is the default knife. I hacked it to look cooler using the new transparency effects, that's all. The animation there is from the rarely seen 'flourish' animation. Most people probably don't use the knife long enough to see it. It's in the game. Trust me. I didn't do it, and I'm a little disappointed that I have to post this. It's the default knife, people!
