Most Basic Server Question

I can't believe i have to ask this question but it seems to be so simple that i can't find instructions on it anywhere.
I just want to create a NS game so that five of my buddies can join in over the net. I've hosted many different multiplayer games like this in my time (ghost recon, quakes, unreals, Age of Empires, etc etc etc) and never run into this problem. The game seems to create properly but whenever a friend tries to join it says something along the lines of "Lan games are restricted to people on the local network".
I created an internet game. I didn't go to the Lan Game option. Can someone please give me the most basic instructions on how one hosts an Internet game and then how friends can join it using my IP.
