How Do You Enforce Your Server?

To all admins and owners out there
Hay.

How do you enforce your server rules? Through my travels I have found servers that were once good, and when the owner wasnt there, and gave admin to some guys, the server went to hell. Or when a player suddenly joins and slays everyone, being skilled and smart, he gets banned or kicked.

It has come to my attention that most servers arent well regulated or administered. Most of their real owners arent there most of the time, leaving control to a player that he thinks is nice and worthy. But most of the time he doesnt pay attention that when he isnt around, the server is bad administered, them the gameplay goes to hell and that it isnt a great place to play.

How do you regulate your server? Do you leave it up to your admins, or try to enforce it mostly yourself? Do you let them be kick ban happy? Or have them show proof to you first?

For example, lately, its been Freaks Unleashed CD REQ. It used to be a great pub, but now that one of the [GL] members got admin (Cypher I presume) it has gone straight to hell. I was just there, and it wasnt pretty. 3 of his clan members on marine team (he was on aliens) were doing nothing except spam voice comm, go into comm chair, drop themselves jetpack and a weapon, get out, go fly around and attack something, die, type something unfunny in console, and repeat process. When I spawned, i came late in the game, we had no upgrades. It wasnt funny to die because you were unupgraded badly, against hive 2 aliens at least.

So I told Cypher to please kick or punish his teammates for ruining the marine teams game, what happened? NOTHING

I thought Admins were beyond nepotism, I thought wrong. (GL members doing nothing to help the game and sinking the marines more and more into doom were spitfire, noobie and other I dont remember atm). When I asked why werent they punished, the answer I got was that they made the game fun. Was it fun to spawn, without a commander of plan of action, to hopelessly try to salvage the game?

Call me crazy, But I think not. The worst thing was, when the base was gone, 3 marines, including 2 GL guys were hiding in the map, both teams were tortured to go look for them. I left after 2 mins of waiting and them not being slain. With bad jokes and worse puns being thrown out in globat chat. This may sound like a rant, but believe me, its THAT frustating.

So server admins, how do u control your servers? How do yo ensure the gameplay is great for both sides?

Feel free to post your thoughs, similar experiences and stuff. -____-

I cant be there all the time so I must use a small group of guys that I can trust to admin the server also. I read logs, listen to disputes and try to instill my desires for the server into my admins. Then cross my fingers and hope all goes well.

Our server policy can be found on our homepage at www.cofr.net

I agree that admins make or break a server. Since I rarely stray from CoFR resources I have yet to see much of th poblem but even I have been subjected to bad admins. It's up to the server owner or server community to make sure their admins are up to it, here's how it works at our place:

Only CoFR members are admins. Since we have an age limit (21) and it is in general VERY hard to get in (you have to write a good testimonial, hang around for a long time and play with us AND have a senior CoFR member sponsor you) we don't really have problem. On rare ocasions we have given non-members limited admin privilidges. Those people have been selected carefully.

All CoFR admins have signed the EULA and agreed to uphold our admin rules and standards.

ALL admin activities are tracked. We have a custom built log system making it VERY easy to check all actions on the server. Any and all complaints, both against players and admins, are swiftly investigated and cleared. We have a Super Admin, or "Admin Admin" that will remove a persons admin rights if they are being abused. It has happened a handful of times, which is not that much considering we have a lot of servers and 100+ admins and have been running servers for 3+ years.

We also have an unban committee where people can appeal, as well as specific unban forums for certain servers.

Of course we have more resources and experience then most communities and server owners, as well as a capacity for more bureaucracy, so I don't expect other servers to be run like this.

To date we have never had a problem with admins of the magnitude of someone slaying a team or banning someone just because they lost, I suspect that is a maturity-issue and because of our rather high (in internet terms) average age (30+) that isn't a big issue with us.

I must say that I find many server admins to be WAY to liberal on kicking/banning (especially permaban). Usually, when a player is messing up despite the admin scolding him, it's because he doesn't believe that the guy has admin. I was admin on a CS server until about a year ago, and from time to time people would try to order around their team with threats of banning. Since I KNEW the guys didn't have admin privileges, it was quite entertaining (especially when I started exercising MY privileges ). Anyway, as I was saying, most people who misbehave in the face of an admin just don't believe the guy HAS admin, in which case a simple slap or slay will prove your point. That usually puts the offenders in their place. If THAT doesn't help, slaying the guy two or three times a few seconds after respawning (just as he's finished humping) will get the job done, i.e. he will leave or behave. After that we can move on to kicking, tempbanning and permabanning.

I have had admin on one server (hell hill back on old school DoD, and that was b/c I spent nearly a full day on just that server )

however, if you want to take a look at good policy, go look at Voogru's forums. (Don't bring up your hate of voogru b/c you will simply end up locking this poor guys thread, so don't flame him, I don't care if you have enugh evidence to get him the electric chair in RL)
And there is the key, forums.
No admins (save Voogru, and Kahuna, the owner) are alowed to ban for longer then 24 hrs.
These bans are then brought to the atention of Voogru or Kahuna (I tihnk thats how it worked) and the Ban is droped/exetended/what ever.
Also if you thik some one is abusing you can go to the forum and Talk it out (so long as you are civil) I know there are a few admins who have been debarded b/c of actions.

So thats what it comes down to. Each admin must know exactly what he can/can't do (this can esily be done with admin mod), and Know the consequences for over stepping thier reach.

The Server that I had admin on also WAS home of a clan, spawn camping, team stacking twits. That got banned from the server

So yah here is my list:
    1) Attentive supper adimns that can and will enforce their rules
    2) Good sub admins that know their place and will be stripped of power if the abuse
    3) logging
    4) Forum

(if you want carification feel free to ask)

I enjoy admins who obey the rules that are posted when you connect. I dislike when admins make up things at spur of the moment, that they "forgot" to put into the motd (join text). I enjoy admins who give a warring(s) to those who choose to disobey rules (hey, we all forget) before they ban. I dislike admins who slay/kick/whatever entire teams/groups of people for something silly.

Pretty much, admins that obey their own server rules w/o adding to them and keep thier heads cool is what I enjoy.
