Getting A New Harddrive [when I Get Money]

<div class="IPBDescription">But i already have four "slots" filled</div> Okay, here's the deal:

I already have an 80GB harddrive, a 60GB harddrive, a CD-R, and a CD-RW. supposedly this fills up my four possible "slots"...

I want to get another harddrive [I've run out of space and i uh.. need it] when I save up enough money for one. But i need/want it to be connected constantly, as with the other two, so i would have the 80gb, the 60 gb, the second 80gb, the cd-r and cd-rw connected at once

im just wondering how i could do this [specifically, please, how it works, how much it costs, if it might not work with some computers, etc]

if you need any details, i.e what computer i have, what hdds, etc, then just ask and ill give you <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

thanks

    buy an add-in ide card.
Or get rid of the CD drive since you don't need a CD-R AND a CD.

    okay

ill research the IDE card, thanks

its just useful to have two cd drives, cos it takes considerably less time than copying it onto hdd then burning onto cd

    oh well

You do need 2 if you copy CD's or it takes f****** ages to copy....
Yeh you can buy add ide cards, but i dont know how much in your US dollars. A good place to get stuff though is <a href='http://www.ebuyer.com' target='_blank'>ebuyer</a>.

PLEASE tell me you're doing video editing, and that's why you need 200 gigs of space.

Actually, if you just pull an ISO of the original image with something like BlindRead, and then burn the ISO with BlindWrite, it goes pretty quickly.
You're also more assured of having a clean disc image, as you don't have to deal with the additional power draw from the reading-CD, nor the vibration (and possible harmonics) caused by two spinning CDs at once. You also can normally read at MUCH higher rates than write.

Additionally, you don't have to worry about IDE channel maxing, which can happen (and cause problems) if both CDs are on the same channel (cable.. one Master, the other Slave)... much better to write from the Primary IDE channel to the Secondary, or vice-versa.

All in all, I'd just keep the CD-RW in the machine and slap the new 80 in the old CD-R's place.

IDE expansion cards are an option, but you want to be careful to get a good one... I've tried using an older Promise card in a MDA rig, and it ended up glitching the system as either the on-board disabled itself, or the on-board and the expansion fought for control in weird ways, even with the expansion being told that it was the slave unit. Stuff like the system trying to boot from the expansion, or disk letters getting jumbled around and making programs act wonky.
If you NEED another channel, I'd put some thought into making the new chain a SCSI unit. Your mobo (if it's new enough) may already have a header for it, and in general (especially with UW-SCSI) you'll get better throughput for intensive disk access. The cost? Well... cost. SCSI stuff tends to be higher-priced per gig.

Really depends on what you're going to be using it for. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
