can't join a game
I upgraded my motherboard/processor/graphics card and had to reinstall windows. Two days ago (on the new board) I could play. With my new card I was getting 100 fps! Sweet! But the sound sucked (on-board sound, bleeach!) So i put in my old sound card. I installed the drivers and now the sound is good but...
Problem:
When I start up NS (either from the sstart menu shortcut, or from Gamespy or ServerInfo) it shows the loading screen, then the console and the server starting up. But when it gets to the poitn where it is just about to load me in, my computer freezes...completely! My keyboard is unresponsive, I can't even get caps lock to turn the LED on and off! I tried to run a demo file and tried to start my own LAN game but to no avail! So I don't think it is a network issue. I have to hard reset my computer (ctrl-alt-del won't work)
System:
AMD Athlon 1.33Ghz
256MB RAM
Aureal Vortex 8820 sound card driver (the sound card is by Turtle Beach, can't tell which one)
Nvidia Geforce4 TI 4200 with AGP8X (whatever *that* is) and 128MB
Win2k SP3
I am running in OpenGL @ 800 x 600
Old System:
Intel PIII 600Mhz
192 MB SDRAM
Aureal Vortex 8820 sound card driver (the same card as above, so I don't think it is this card)
Nvidia Quadro2 Pro (this was an Nvidia Geforce2 MX but a friend did the resistor mod on it)
Win2k SP3
I ran in OpenGL @ 800 x 600 before, too
One problem I may be having is that I was trying to get that on-bard sound card to work so there may be residue from two sound cards...not sure if that would be the problem....but I was able to play with the new system lited above only with bad on-board sound. Since I reinstalled Windows my computer has forgotten all of the apps that it has installed on it. For some that doesn't seem to be a problem (I just have to re-enter my CD-key the first time I started up NS). For others...I am reinstalling Diablo II when I get done with this post. I went a head and reinstalled NS, thinking thta with my faster card and what-not I should do that. But that didn't help either. I couldn't un-install NS first because Windows had forgotten that it was ever installed.
Thanks for your help! Sorry about the long post!

Disable onboard sound in your device manager (not sure if that's the right term, I use german w2k).
If you replace any essential hardware like mainboard or cpu always do a reinstall of all your programs. Or, even better, delete ALL the old stuff and install freshly from scratch, to minimize the chance of failures.
but yah, as for what Tuco, when ever you do a rehaul: reformat your HD, it is good for it
also reinstalling windows with out a reformat can bork often
