okay, now that i've gotten a few images out of the way, id like to ask for your opinions on the matter...

in a gaming review by hyper [australian gaming magazine. they gave it 89/100] they just provided a few images [not the ones above], and explained pretty much what all the other age of empires games have. as far as im aware, there are no big changes or new things. essentially the same way to do it, graphics are less than average, and all it has new is the time thing... which is basically a spin-off of the AOE "bronze age, dark age, iron age" or whatever, but they have from pikemen to tanks, etc [tank games i never really liked [red alert], i prefer old fashioned down-and-dirty warfare games]. sort of like age of mythology, but follows the same general theme as aoe2, only from what ive seen, its just another aoe but... worse, because its exactly the same in all the places that counts, but slightly worse than the classic

but then again, i havent played it, ive only seen a few screenshots and a fairly unhelpful review. [when is it coming out?]

your takes on it?

It is my opinion that you need to resize the pictures to fit the board properly.

Looks like AoE deluxe. I think I just stick to my Conquerors, it's unbalanced but fun with friends as long as you make few rules of your own

I d/l the demo. It is much like AOE except it focuses a little more on the military. It was kinda funny when I was playing on hard and the computer was sending fighter jets at my knights. What annoys me a lot is that you can't save on the demo.

But isn't RON like an update to Empire Earth? It looks like similar graphics (but somewhat better). Are the guys that made EE doing RON (Sierra?).

Played the demo, awesome fun. Reminds me much about AoE but a lot funnier.

I have this game. I love this game. The game is out now. Get this game. AOE doesn't let you nuke your opponents, or assign combat bonuses for flanking you enemies, or fight off hordes of charging barbarians from your capitol for 15 minutes. Nothing quite says f*ck diplomacy like a nuke at your neighbors doorstep. Gives you a war and fuzzy feeling inside.

I recall hearing good things about this game, but I can't say for sure =\

this was a very very productive post to this topic

Actually it has little in common with AoE. There's much less eco MM due to auto villagers and gather caps. Static defenses work. Wonder/special resource bonusses have a large impact. Territorial borders/attrition damage make forward bases impossible. Planes and missiles add a whole new layer. The single-player game is not a story campaign but a Risk-like TBS.

This game adds so much to the genre, I really can't understand where the AoE comparisons are coming from.

Oh, and it has nothing to do with Sierra's EE (fortunately). RoN was designed by Sid Meier's Brian Reynolds and published by Microsoft.

What I like is that as time progresses all the buildings upgrade automatically, as do the unit options. Take the Scout for example.

    Ancient = Scout
    Upgrade to next age: Explorer
    Next: Can't remember
    Next: Commando
    Next: Special Forces
    Next: Elite Special Forces

RoN is awsome, period. I've played almost every RTS under the sun, and this one could be up there with RA and Staries. It has insane replayability (read the website, or I'll just quote it; More than 200 military units appear in Rise of Nations. Each of the 18 nations has at least four special units of its own, and all share several types of units in common. Each military unit looks slightly different depending on which nation deploys it, and will change in appearance over time.' They can all be seen here. )

Not to mention it has 4 'techlines' with about 8 techs in each, and just as many ages. Each age gives you about 20 more upgradeable researches, and each 'techline' research does almost the same. Then, when you do get all the techline upgrades and every age, you get 4 'super upgrades', more or less to just make the game end already All those upgrades can be seen here.

Multiplayer has about 30 game modes, and dozens more ways to win (standard 'conquest', map percentage held, even 'wonder point' systems). Singleplayer is a mix of AoE/Shogun and Risk, and you can play this waaaaaay too many times

If you're wondering what the full game is like, it is insane. Its very, very addictive and fun It really plays on my 'Straiegest' side (ie: I did a pincer attack on a computer, attacking from two sides with tanks and forcing them up or down, they went down... right into my anti-tank/MG's ;p)

Or you can play it cool, defend and just build up an uber-army... I attacked with about 200 stealth bombers in one ;p

Its insane, I really really suggest you get it

Oh, and on Population limits, it all depends. Its based off how many cities you have, then upgrades. Normal max is around 200, then you can get some upgrades to up it to 250, and one race (the Bantu) have a max of like 350. Plus, if you build a 'basic unit' (like, soldiers etc) you get 3 for every one, so you can have upto around 700 units if you wanted too. It doesnt even lag if you do, very well optimised (assuming you have a mid-range pc ;p) Then when you get higher-level military, you can get better stratagies, which makes your squads look like little elite squads as two run up, one ducks behind, one stops and the last comes to the front etc etc

    Very well thought out

Oh, I forgot to mention, if everyone fires more than 8 nukes in the game (12, if you get an upgrade first) the game ends under the 'Armageddeon' game rule Sooooo many suprises in this game. Well traveled areas (like, trade routes etc) even get roads under them

This game reminds me of Civ 3 were you could get like hunderds of different units as well (U went from cave men to up through history to mech warrior stuff. Also you could pick a nation or group of people and make then "evolve" to where they are today. You could research everything from weapons, to recycling methods, the wheel, to the cure for cancer.

Ths game looks cool as well. In terms of 700 units om the screen, have u ever played any of the Total War games?

Typical battles have around unit counts in the thousands on your screen at one time.

Only Shogun, but I loved that (for its most part - mopping up all the rebels bored me). People tell me that Medieval plays better than Shogun. And some of the previews of Rome I've read have blown me awaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!

Anyhoo, I got my giro cashed yesterday so I think I'll buy this one. And what a fantastic acronym! CS? NS? EE?AoE? Bah - NONE OF THEM have anything on RON! Hahaha! If only more games could abbreviate to such fantastic words.

I read your post and anything from the creators of Civ is worth getting, so far I've bought every civ game that's come out even the ungodly creation that was a call to arms 2.

If you haven't played Civ 3 give it a go, I think you can get it for like 9 bucks now and it's tons of fun.
