How To Build A Training Map ?

But since there is no definit answers (surely because they are too busy and I understand completly !), then how about telling the community how to do it ?
You could do a kind of a small contest for submiting training maps and you could pick the best one to be included into version 1.1

I think there would have to be scripts and bots but not everyone knows how to do it so having the proper infos would help the community decides if they want to do theire own and send it to you guys.

Why not let the community build training maps and submit them to the NS team so they can pick the best ones to put in v 3.0 ?
If not, then let the community do it anyway and show it to the rest of the community so we can try them out.
I dought it if the NS guys mind that the community build training maps of theire own. It would be more challenging for the community to do such maps.
After all, if the community does it, it leaves the NS guys more free time to concentrate on v 3.0. Don't you think ?
Don't keep mentioning that one is supposed to be in the making (that's not the purpose of my thread). I'm not asking a status on the one from the NS guys.
If you know how to do it, then tell us how and/or that you are willing to do one for the community. Think of it as a challenge for the community. It will be fun doing it ourselves and testing it ourselves.
AFAIK there is no scripting or perfect bots yet.
1. The bots are still in early alpha stages so you probably would need lots of scripted sequences and that would take alot of time. Unless one of the bot developers could maybe make a special "Training Bot" with limited features??? We should talk to the 2 major bot developers for this.
2. Maps. We should have a concept drawing contest for the training map and then a few selected people will create the map.
3. Positions. What could we teach them as marine? We should at least teach them the basics of commanding and how to shoot properly and hit stuff. Also to use all the weapons in the correct manner (Mines, GL, HMG, LMG, SG, Welder)
4. Coordination. There would have to be a small team that would work together. Maybe the community could decide on team members so that we get the best possible team for it. Maybe make it a mini-mod??? If you have all the community working together un-coordinated..... it will just fall. Maybe if the community has a really good texture or sound or something that they can submit it and get feedback.
5. Aliens. This side will definetely be a lot more complex to teach. Especially the Gorge. Maybe we could implament some type of "Alien Waypoint scripted sequence" so that it shows where to build a certain chamber.

7. Time. NS 1.1 will be coming out in a few weeks and with this just starting do you think this would make it in time??? Maybe we should start now and get concepts going.... No detailed information should be given since a lot will be changed very soon.

or, if you want to wait, i am shure one of the 20 of us mappers working on the pack would like to do it, though this would be a wait.
the sp ns pack should be out for ns 1.2 though its upto the amount of scripting put into the 1.2 dll

I for one couldn't work on this. I don't have enough time (too many projects).
Right now, the most serious comitments we've seen were from briguy992 and amckern. So how about the rest of you guys ?
Sure it's alot of work but if no one says "I'm doing it" then I think we will all have to wait until the NS guys do it and close this thread.
I started this thread to state that it can be done by the community if they sit down and talk about it. Even if it would not be up to everobody's expectations, once the next NS version is out, it will be easier to adapt your Training maps to it (delivery will be faster then starting from scratch at the next NS release).

A training map would be very usefull for introducing new players to the game, and i see no reason for waiting that long to implement one.
I'd expect it in by 2.0 at the very most.

We need to wait for at least 1.1 because things are going to be radically different. No point in trying to teach 1.04 things. Has anyone actually gotten a hold of Flay or a dev to talk about scripted sequences?
I'd also like to know what we can teach players. How to shoot skulks? You do that by playing online. What different buildings do? I suppose, but there is a manual and cl_autohelp for that. How to command? You really need to interact with other people to learn. I suppose the only thing you could really teach is the different guns and maybe alien classes.(not really how to shoot, Half-life has a built in shooting/training map!)

The community will decide what they want. I'm not sure Flay would know bout NS scripted sequences that much.... Ok if you dont know what to teach some1 in a training map go play the HL training map. It teaches you how to move and do some complex manuevers too. You dont do hardcore skulk-shootin training. you just get this fake looking skulks that fly up and you shoot them. For the commander that is where the bot programming comes in. It would need heavy scripted sequences and maybe add some type of "training waypoint" so it shows where to build it. The training map will take a while to learn but hey... look at the mods starting for HL2... they are in the same situation as us.
