The model...

I've had this on my mind for a while...
How many marine models will there be? Wouln't it be benifical to have MANY so you can tell your teammates apart at first glance. Somthing like Desert Crisis' customization would be cool.

Anyone look at the current model in detail. I like it and all.. but will someone explain to me why he is wearing JEANS?!?!? When playing bob, it must feel like your snacking on fricking Buddy Lee!

Ideas for marine skins....

Leave the green armour and the helmet, but make the other material under it customizable.

Texture Ideas...
Mukade from Oni... his model was fricking awesome. Just a pleathery, sheen, black substance.

An all white substance with "nodes" running through it.. (I cant quite explain the "node" like a circle with a tail extending all down it. Kind of like....

all up and down his arms and legs and stuff.

a shimmery metallic substance (oh god! can the HL engine handle it?)

More questions:
How good is this particle effect system? will it throw realistic smoke off of marine turrets? can it even be used for anything besides mapping? If it can, could you make tiny exhale really sharp when he charges and kick up dust beneath him? Could you make a marine model that smoked when the armour was struck? Can you make realistic blood with this (base HL bloodSUCKS)?

I'm gonna shut up before I get slapped....

The More-Marine-Models-Question was discussed already...There are serious plans to add more models and/or skins for the marines, but almost definately not in the first release (dev-team, please correct me if I'm wrong).

    I didn't understand the texture-idea...

    For the particle-system:
I like your gun-smoke idea, but i think it's not good to overuse this feature because it may cause lags and it's never good to overuse something

give me a 100ghz CPU a 1 gig gfx card and a 10gq/sec modem and then i'll consdier playing with that many particle effects.
the nescecerry coding to send teh particle information required for each bullet fired would clog up my phone line for the rest of the year

Sheesh, I wish we could do some of this, but making things like armour smoking in the HL engine COULD be too mcuh work for too little benifit!

Ok, customizing marines skins is hopefully going to be added later, but for the first release, there will be only one skin. Skins take time, and there is still some placeholder art in there that needs to be skinned first.

As for realism with the particle system, I might see stuff like that come in the future, but again, a lot of work for such small gain. Maybe I am wrong, but I think the team is more devoted onb bug fixing and balancing right now

re- shimmery stuff. Yes, the engine can do it. Look at Barney's helmet.

It's actually a pretty simple effect to use, in a model.

Would you rather he wore trashcans up to his armpits?

They might not be jeans anyhow, just blue shielded combat trousers or the like. Not all jeans are blue, and not everything blue is a pair of jeans.

Jeans are durable and the TSA is not THAT far in the future. Plus, it gives some character to the marines. Im tired of every Space Marine in every game being uniformly high tech and similar looking. it adds variety and shows this as the middle (not near, not far) future.

I guess your concerns about the Jeans are coming from the first skinned version of the marine, still available in the RR (multiple shots of the model on black ground, ironic comment by MonsE).

The skin has been altered since then, one of the changes being the removal of the pockets and sinmiliar stuff. Now it looks more like some blue all-purpose trousers.

Oh, and Necro, the PS is strictly client-side, and the more cosmetic systems may be switched off. It wouldn't harm your performance at all.

Leet ideas, I like the costumizable skins for marines, there has to be some way of making they have small diffrences, but enough to have many diffrent persons look slightly diffrent from each others!

About the particle system, looks fun to make it work in the armor, but do marines "really" have an armor? All I see in the screenies is a counter for Health and that's it!

and another thing... the Particles would look cool in a map with rain or snow... sparks or stuff.

Also, Terran Buildings could occasionally release smoke streams, with a nice sound, to add a feeling of an hidraulic system or any other mechanical stuff really working inside it. Like sentry-guns spraying a small quantity of smoke everytime they stopped firing, so ppl had the feeling that it was cooling itself after firing!

And also, that could be used for fetid gases released by aliens when they died or something. You can even make a kind of alien that "farts" and fills a room with a gas that damages Marines that attempt to breath in the surroundings
not joking! it would be cool!

P.S. - Comprox, you're the famous guy whose name keeps appearing in the screenies at that readyroom site? So you've played the game yourself! Woah!

They do, it just doesn't have a sprite on the HUD yet.

Some devices already do this, like resource nozzles. MOst of the structures move and make noise and such, which is enough, as a flood of particles starts to impact people with decrepit PC hardware.

The Level3 Alien (The Flyer) has an attack called the 'spore cloud', which sets off a haze of noxious fumes that drift and such. Harmfless to other aliens. You can see a pic of it below (showing a non-flyer walking through a cloud of spores). The Level4 alien will also have a cloud-based weapon called 'Umbra' which is still under wraps.

If you can tone down the PS effects, couldn't you include a few extra for people with beastly undertaxed machines like mine? I'd like to see smoke wisp from the end of my shotgun after dispatching a bob. What about Xenocide? does it look cool? Please make the blood look good. I know it isn't a realism mod but good blood is important (about the only reason I play DC is for the way the sawed off kill looks).

Blood definitely isn't a focus of NS... Flay is looking for a very broad release to a very wide market, including overseas markets like Germany which has pretty strict rules about gore in video games. Marines don't bleed at all, aliens do, and I don't expect that will change any time soon. The marines let off sparks (ricochet off their armor) when they're hit.

Personally, I haven't seen a Xenocide happen yet. I just see
    "Killtoy X Mojo
    Killtoy X MonsE
    Killtoy X Humbaba
         X Killtoy"

on my screen and know we're winning.

MonsE actually means harm*LESS* to aliens. It's a nice cover weapon.

As for "Comp, the lucky guy to play the game!"... anyone with "Playtester" as their forum rank is currently playing the beta, as are the developers and most (all?) of the forum moderators.

Terran means 'From Terra'. I.e, from the planet Earth. The Starcraft guys didn't invent the term...

anyone wonder why it lags when people get shot in firearms? TOO MANY FRIGGIN EFFECTS WHEN YOU GET SHOT!!! so yeah overusing such great effects sucks unless you have a godlike computer, which i'd say, 90% DO NOT have.
