no it's not the end I'll be bringing it back online now. Not sure what the problem is at this stage as I've not checked it. Probably nothing a reboot won't sort out.

It will be going down completely at some point in the next few months (mainly because you can't get a >256Kbps upload DSL connection for any reasonable price in the UK :/) but I'll let you know when it does.

Well thank god for the short term, I know the UK has WAY over priced internet, and very slow in comparrison to the other "First world" countries.
Our internet lines have the capability for 50 GB (per street) yet the fastest we can get is 2mb? (thats the cable side, dunno bout the DSL) TBH lets all start a cheaper internet movement!!!

If we got together the regulars willing to contribute, I'd say we could easily hire a server. It's just not the same though <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

If there's someone who could host the machine, I have all the hardware ready it just needs a connection to sit on (one quiet box, no monitor, no keyboard, no mouse, not too big)

BTW the server will be down until I get home today, something is up and I can't VNC to it. I know what the problem is but I need to be there in person (it's been about a month, maybe 2 without a hard reboot, and as we all know on windoze that's bad news).

server now back online, and I'm around to play (for a change)

My much preferred option is to have the server on the network it's currently on. That requires someone at this uni housing the server in their room (preferably someone who doesn't use the internet at all to protect my back too, as the MAC address is registrered to me, wouldn't want any accusations of pron etc attributed to me <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->).

That however is massively unlikely.

I will do some hunting of server deals sometime. I'm thinking the server will go down mid-July, just FYI.

Be grateful - I've moved back into the country for the holidays, and BT refuse to upgrade our exchange out here. Returning to 56k after ADSL is extremely painful.

ROO i have the answer, not the perfect fix by all means BUT
2 MB cable...

512k cable has a 128k upload and can run 8 man servers easily(12 man with a little lag)
1 mb has 256k and runs 12 man sweetly
2 mb (going by logic) will have 512k upload ,16 man will run good and still have loads left over for any other web needs u may have.

Thats Telewests cable, dunno if thats near you.

Its like our hangout <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> we went there before we were in clans, and no matter that our clans have their own servers we come back to roo's (lets be honest it basically is Clan Viagra's home server <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->) Its the server we honed our skills on, Its the server i learned how to <!--emo&::lerk::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/lerk.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='lerk.gif'><!--endemo--> effectively, because you (roo) never did the usuall kick the player if he lerks on one hive, you are the fairest (if somewhat driven by temper) admin there is.

But all things must end, so come mid july spare a thought for the lads.

128k upload can't run a 8 person server, unless you want to set sv_maxrate to 1.8 <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

256 should just barely handle an 8 person, with sv_maxrate set to 3.6 or so.

If I'm doing the math wrong please let me know.

i'd be happy to contribute something towards hiring something.

I know a few guys who work for ISP's that might be able to host the box - but access would be very tricky.

definatly the best UK server tho (when there is a spot free)
