actually, more of a snap, crackle, pop..
OK, I was reinstalling Neverwinter Nights, and it asked to insert the play disk, so I did....

I sat down and watched TV while it was installing, and it stopped about halfway through and kind of sat there for awhile. Well, its a 2 year old computer so I just thought it was thinking, then all of a sudden the front nof the CD rom drive pops out a little and a puff of smoke escapes. Well, Im like oh great (actually I was like @$%:@#@**&^@#%$^&@!@*!!!!! and colon semi-colon too!) must have fried itself, but it didn't smell like it was fried. I try to open the drive and of course it wouldn't open, so I stick a little paper clip in the emergency eject hole, and with alot of force, out it pops, and out falls parts of a shattered CD....

Needless to say, now I got to take it out, open it up, and fish out all the peices of broken CD, and hope it still runs right, if not then I will have to run everything off the CD burner.

Oh, and I figured out it wasn't smoke, it was CD dust from when it shattered...

man, I love my life.

Man, that sucks, you need to search for the Shards of the CD (Sounds like a chessy game huh?) and you lost a game.

That happened to me with a PCGamer disc. I inserted it, ran the autorun thing and it just exploded. We cleared out the drive of shards and it worked fine until one day it didn't, about a year later. That was about 2 weeks ago, we bought a DVD-RW drive instead so it's all good

I have a plextor burner that spins some cds VERY VERY fast. I always use Nero to turn down the speed, or just use my DVD reader to read discs.

This REALLY sucks because even the great plextor 3 year warrenty doesn't cover cd shattering.

What cd drive was it, and what is the max speed, just so we know what we shouldn't buy.

I've heard of this happening on high speed drives when you leave CDs in there for a long time, they heat up, get brittle. Then, booooom.

/me cherishes his Star Wars Galaxies Beta CDs

With high speed CD roms the geforces involved in spinnig the disk are INCREDIBLE!! Remember CD's are only thing bits of plastic so its not surprising they shatter on people all the time.

Actually, one of the batches of Neverwinternights CDs were dogy. There was something like a small scratch or line round the rim. Those CDs have been known to explode or shatter. Unlucky for you that you happend to have one of those CDs.

Atari (aka infogrames) is the publisher/distributer. thus why you go to them for your free CD

just as sierra is the publisher of HL and Valve is the designer/programers

Happened to my GF when she was trying to install Splinter Cell. Not her fault, the CD Drive was just in a bad mood that day. Only in her case it literally exploded. She told me it sounded like the Apocalypse.

Consider yourselves lucky that the cdrom drive's didn't shatter the disk and open the drive door at the same time....
    Shrapnel anyone?

More amusing is the case of the cdrom drives that "forcively eject" cds like frisbees.
