System Shock 3 Engine

if it were made...
well, recently EA has said they do NOT own the rights to system shock's any more so it's quite likely a 3rd one would be made, so which engine would you want it for?

i'd say doom3. simply because it's a lot more 'scary' than the hl2 engine

HL2 pwns Doom 3. You'll be able to make VERY scary environments in HL2. Probably better than Doom 3. I think it'll be on the HL2 engine, indefinately, if it were to come out.

HL2 engine because I want it to run on my computer.

Doom3 doesnt have enough interactables to be SS3.

HL2 would have pretty cool possibilities for SS3, like the AI. Being able to use object as cover eg Steel containers and then push them over to crush enemys.

To rephrase that: "HL2? Excellent choice sir! Thats the Trioptimum™ way!" *boom*
(play SS2 if you don't get it)

HL2 for sure, you'd need to be able to shove objects infront of doors and stuff so the zombies can't get to you. You can also rip stuff from the walls and build a little base camp to hide in, and never leave.

Though Doom3 may offer better solutions for lighting (atmosphere in the System Shock series was a BIG part of it), HL2's Havok-licensed physics engine fosters more emergent playing styles, which is a nice industry buzzword for "the player gets to do stuff intuitively even if we hadn't though of it, just because the way everything works in the world makes sense."

So we want good lighting/graphics, and the Havok physics engine. What does this mean? It means we should stop limiting ourselves to thinking about just the HL2 or Doom3 engines. My vote goes to the engine used by Deus Ex 2: Invisible war and Thief 3, all the way.

DX2 is going to use modified unreal warfare engine i think, with havok physics included. Not sure about thief3

well, I hope they do make a SS3, hopefuly as good as the first two!

I don't really care as long as
1. it can run on my computer Ie. not doom 3
2. they don't screw it up
and 3. they use the havok physics engine or something better

They're both being done by ION Storm, so they both will use the same engine, have Havok physics licensed, and will likely have similar AI. And because Warren Spector has had his hand in both of these series and the System Shock series, I'm convinced the team would make a great System Shock 3.

I havent seen much of Deus Ex2 for a long time. But I saw some of those shadows, and wow. But I'd rather have uber physics. I mean who wouldnt want to use a gravity gun in SS throw those pesky mutants aside. But then Doom 3 wouldnt run on many machines.

Im looking forward to that high detail pack for SS2.

Didn't you read the other posts in this thread? DX2 uses havok!

definitly hl2 engine... its the most interactive engine ive seen so far.. could you imagin to use every debris you can pick up as weapon? need a weapon? no problem sir..just rip off some of this pipes from the wall..
or build barricades against the zombie scums.. lol you could even build very simple traps

yeah hl2 for ss3

hl2 interactivity + psyics + doom3 rendering/lighting = best evar.
• BurrBurr Join Date: 2002-11-19 Member: 9358Members
hmm, I could use my psychic powers to pick up heavy objects and hurl them toward the menacing undead, hopefully there will be undead, there has to be undead. Plus, the ending just sets it up for a sequal anyway!

Actually, technically the hybrids in SS2 were dead. One of the logs tells you that there were no heart or brain functions/signles but then the patient spoke to the nurse.

Still I can just see myself now, quickly building a wall to defend myself.

Is it just who can see the irony of people arguing over which game engine is better with out even playing any of them (no the doom3 leaked alpha do not count)

Fact Doom3 has little or no interactables.
Fact HL2 is full on interactables.

System Shock needs to be interactive.
That and youd be lucky to get Doom 3 running on many machines.

Why do you people ignore me? Havok is used in the DX2/Thief3 engine as well as HL2, that means that you can do the same kind of stuff (barricading and whatnot) in DX2, HL seems to have lower system requirements, which is nice, but chances are very high that they will make it witht the DX2 engine, why? Well, which company is made out of a bunch of Looking Glass refugees? Ion Storm, why would they pay for the HL2 engine when they already have a kickass one of thier own?
