... first game of NS?
the gen. dicussion forum has changed. there are so much topic about 1.1 isseus(quite informative) and about JP/HMG rushes and how peeps are in love with NS. i don't really have a problem with this, just wanted to point it out.

now back on topic.

do you remember your first game of NS? the time where this game was just a confusing mass of blue circles and whtre you would always ponder if you suddenly saw your armor rise to 200+ or got a big gun in your hands? when a skulk saw you earlyer than you him you were dead? ah, those wondrous times. it was the time that you were a newbie(not to be confused with noob).

i saw NS in my GS daily letter although i didn't pay much attention to it, but after a time i got fed up with the majority of mods i played(from which many are once again beginning to amuse me) so i decided to download it(about a week after the release). after reading the manual i connected to a reasonable full server. i ended up at 'rines team.

i endud up being confused by the plethora of bleu circles on my screen. as keen my intellect is i noticed after a few games that the circles represented enemys(i skipped a few things in the manual though). so i've waited till a mob of fellow 'rines were leaving and joined 'em. the kharaa seemed to be little creatures with a nasty attack, while the gorges seemed almost incapable of defending themselves. after being killed over and over again i finaly managed to kill a few skulks without dieing(although a group was required)

suddenly my armor expanded to a amount over the 200 and my gun became bigger and a big bleu circle named waypoint appeared.so i decide to follow the the rest of the 'rines doomtrain and end up at a building with a big sack hanging on the ceiling immediatly they drop all kinds of suff there including some big *ss cannon so we start shooting the hive and keep shooting(it took a good 5 mins to kill it). and it's dead.
in the next round i encountered fades and got my hands on a Gl(i thought it was some kind of rifle like the anti-tank rifle of dino crisis 2).

after a while i took some time of of NS 'cause of the reign of 'rines(there were some isseus back then) and then i made my return clear with the topic:
"Hey, i'm back"
"Did i miss something?"

feel free to tell about your newbiehood back then in this topic.

I havent' read the manual before my first NS game... You can imagine what followed...

hera. aliens....

Of course, I morphed into a gorge.... and I was completely lost, I thought a gorge is a better class than skulk for fighting... I disconnected after 5 minutes and started reading that manual...

my first game was amazing...

Before the release we hanged out in the IRC, then someone came in an said"hey, you can play with the server release" i wouldnt beliefe him, but i downloaded the server release...
well, then i joined a game... it crashed...
i joined another game with another map... i was in the readyroom (it was hera) i was happy and wanted to join the marines.. it crashed... but i dont gave up, i joined another game, nancy... i joined marines.. i seemed to work :-)
well, there were many playtesters, it was a great fun, for nearly all it was the first game. A playtester went com. He had voicecom. He gave us a waypoint every few meters, so we were never lost. We locked down a hive(the entire marine team moved as one group, because no one knew the map and we feared the aliens *g*) i was super cool, a com wich told us excactly what to do, the marines did ecxactly what they were told to do(at least when they knew what they should do *G*) i remember when i wanted a jetpack... but i couldnt pick it up.. it tock me some time to figure out that i was wearing a HA.. *g*... it was a great game, and all that 2-3 hours before the official release

well me i actually read the manual and knew what to do pretty much. first game i played marine as commander on eclipse.

since i read the manual, i knew what the structures did... but i did turret farm the base . pretty much we got phases to 2 of the hives and excessive amount of turrets everywhere.. we eventually won once my team figured out how to get to computer core

Wandering around Nothing totally clueless as Onos. Luckily I had company since I had two other Onos trailing me. Guess they thought I knew the way - very silly of them. I did read the manual but as it isn't very good as a newbieguide, I was completely lost all the same.

My first game involved me reciving a bile-bomb to the head twice, which was fatal. I had just spawned, and the game was allready over. However This wasn't my first first go, I picked aliens first, and I instantly was hooked to the skulk's playstyle. I naturally learned everything very quickly, and thanks to a LOT of fps experience (in retrospect) I quickly became a skilled skulk within weeks. - mY first game as a kharaa though ended as soon as I spawned, again.

I'm not sure if this was my first game of NS, but surely a very early one.
I had followed Natural-Selection for many months already, so I wasn't completely lost.
At the beginning, I spent most time drooling about the artwork. As the tooltips suggested, I joined the Marines (I hate the word rhines!) first.
Soon I had to realize that nearly everyone joined marine (well, everyone who read the tooltips and thought 'I'm a newbie, so I'll have to go marine first').
Since I'm a nice guy, I immediatly switched to the Kharaa. After another loong period of drooling (it was a completely new experience for me, looking from the top of the ceiling down on some passing marines, knowing that they couldn't see me) I tried to learn playing (I knew many of the theory before, but that didn't help THAT much).
Fortunately, I had the luck that I played together with NemesisZero, who fulfilled his role as a NSGuide perfectly and gave us every information we little wannabe-skulks needed at that time.

Many people had big problems during the first week, as there were some major bug that causes much lag, but I had the luck to find good servers, where I seldomly encountert that problem...

My first game was like ...

- ee ?
- get off gorg... go skulk and attack their base

- go read the manual

kicked by console

I vaguely remember my first game of NS..

The map was caged....I was just roaming around marine start when I saw a chair in the center of the base ( Not sure why it was there).

I got in and looked around, then got out. We had no comm that whole game, just lots of players running around killing.

Well, my first game in NS was kinda weirdo and sucks.
The community was small, unpolite ppl and I didn't know anything.
I've started to play, didn't understand nothing and quit.
I deleted NS.
After a month, maybe 2, I had a desire to download this mod again and learn it, guess what? thats what I did.
I've downloaded the game and with the time learned it all.
Unlike you, I didn't read the Manual, I don't think it's that organized and I never read Manuals.
I learned the game with the time and now I am a known player.

Thats my story.

My first game of ns was on halloween playing with a few of my friends. It resembled turret farms x5 with sauce *this time turrets would hit like a cow*.

Heh.... my 1st game was not what I would have expected. I dind't read the manual, however I'd been having my friend, Shadowics, tell me about the game for quite a while... so, I cam in knowing pretty much what everything did, and what most taboo's were... so I join the same server as him.. only he went aliens, and I went, well, marines. We jumped onto an empty server, and he showed me all of the alien traites, and then rean me down the marine ones.. even showed methe basics of comming *well, I asked questions, he answered them* So for my first game, I was all set.... only I was lacking the one thing that sets newbies apart from veterans..... skill. I'm still working on the skill part, but I've goteen alot better than I was before... and the game is still fun! I love it!! Bewst game I've played in a LOOONG time!

My first game was on eclipse. I wondered around the map for a really long time and couldn't find any aliens, all the corridors confused the hell outta me. Then a skulk came and owned me. Repeat for the next 6 hours, then people started working together. We made and carried out the strategy of...
1. In base bulid TF at least 3 turrets, 2 infantry portals and an armory.
2. Proceed to the nearest node. Build the node and around 4 turrets.
3. Repeat step 2 til you get to a hive, then repeat step 2 but double the turrets.
4. If a complete hive was found, repeat step 2 near the hive but double the turrets and add a siege.

Fun ehh?

My first game of aliens I thought was totally ****. I died so fast and every class totally sucked and didn't do what I had heard about. Then I realized carapace owned (it was horribly bugged at the time to make skulks godlike) and I also figured out that I could change weapons as alien

My first game was OK. I had read the manual knew just about everything. It was in ns_nancy. When I joined my ping was dead high and the game was hardly playable. There were 4 people. I jumped in the comm chair and learned how to play. Fortuneatly everyone was a newb so they hardly knew how important I was and how crap I was.

About a week laterr I became a supreme comm and won games for the marines for a long time. Then players became more experienced. Now I suck

my first game of NS was on caged ... i had not read the manual yet ... but that wasnt the mayor problem
i had a hard time finding my way in the first hours cause the maps are soooo huge compared to other games ( not that i mind i love it ) i was mainly skulking and running like a madman
luckely back in that days the CS players hadnt discovered it and the ping wasnt to great either and the aliens where in for some easy kills
the first few days the aliens won mostly anything on pubs ... until marines started to develop tactics ;-)

ahh well my first game was great ... only problem was i didnt really knew where to go on caged to get from the hives to the marine startpoint

god it was such a long time ago I don't remember. I think I was marine, ns_bast and we were all like "woooow nice" I remember saying "hey check it out theres a menu when you press mouse2 I saw it on ns.org" but nobody really knew how to play. Some people adventured in the comm chair and we did some cool base turrets unaware how bad they were. I also remember a gorge trying to build near our base and just blowing up and he was "WTH? Marines can shoot thru walls?"

Alien games were quite nice too my first game as alien, everyone went gorge (nobody told us it was bad as nobody really knew) and it was really fun. *hehe there's not enough gorges on our team*

I also remember one of my first games on hera, and we went to 3C and I was like *gaaaaasp* a hive omg. It just looked so... hiveish, scary and infested. So we just put a bunch of 15rp sieges in maintenance and blasted it. That was at the time where every single res was fortified with 5 turrets. (first couple days)

Sad thing is I don't have the same feeling when I play NS. I just play mechanically instead of being absorbed by the atmosphere. I suppose those JP+HMG do really ruin it. For both sides. As all those cargo relocating and every single strategy that everyone does without any flexibility.

Agreed, I never thought I would see myself saying "I miss the days when we surrounded every node with turrets and used heavy armor HMGer's", but here I am...

On the first game I ever played, I joined aliens. I had 3450 ping, or something crazy like that. I had joined just as our third hive went up. I hadn't read the manual (oooh. rebel) so I had no idea of what the hell was going on. I spawned as a wierd thing low to the ground, so I checked the weapons.

Bite,
Parasite,
Leap,
Xenocide.

Hmm I thought, the last one sounds cool. So I selected it, ran off and activated it. I promptly blew up. I spawned and done the same thing, not realizing it was the attack that was killing me. Its really funny, I just imagine this confused newb running around and exploding, not knowing what he is doing, and I laugh every time. I don't think I ever made to the rine base that game...

The second game I had was as marine, I joined when our base was going down, and spawned in the faces of 6 onos. I think I remembering screaming and jumping out my seat.

its because we arent new anymore.

the game used to be scary, when you didnt know if soemthing was in the dark corner... but now i know that the likelyhood of someone being in that dark corner without my hearing the footsteps is one in a thousand, and i dont care about it anymore.

the first game of NS i remember, i was aliens because the marine team entrance had a dozen guys bursting out of it... and we were six skulks, no one wanted to be the builder, and then the autohelp told me it was easy to be a builder, so i volunteered, it had been a few minutes and i could tell getting the builder was important. (perhaps this was my fourth game) well, okay. lets talk about intuitive strategies. ones you figure work because it is so in every other game ever. the first structure to choose should eb the cheaper one. odviously it goes first and was intended as such because it is the cheapest. in warcraft you put the farm first, as it is the smallest and cheapest. etc. and hey, sensory sounded good, as seeing is just as important as defense and offense, right? plop plop, two sensories in noname...

OMG WTH
OMG NUB
HOLYS*** NUB
WTH NUB
OMG NUB
KICK HIM!

well i dont think i got kicked, but we did get killed pretty fast. (likely becasue my team was typing flames instead of attacking... surprisingly my clanmates and i can win with sensory jsut as often as with defense, it simply requires a different set of skill and different tactics, you dont go running at the marine when you can hide and have him come to you....)

edit: hey why didnt it censor that for me.

Lolz... I've played several games where I win on aliens with sensory... honestly.. I PLAY better with sensory 1st.... *I love cloaking...*

Oh well.. I just hope I never loose the crawling feeling on the back of my neck when I walk into a dark room.... *and most rooms are dark, since I turn gamma DOWN :-p

I don't remember my first game as such, but I remember going aliens a lot and being gorge because it had a gun
I got yelled at a lot, but kept playing. One day someone just explained about gorges getting more res and how that ruins it for the team, I stopped. I promptly learned to gorge well and still can. All this was back on 56k when marines would stop in a doorway facing the other way and I'd be dead by the time the lag stopped.
Now I have cable...
Fun times.

My first game went like this:
(note: I read the manual)
I spawned in ns_caged and started looking to our huge base. It stretched to mess hall. After I scouted our base, my commander said: "Daedalus, get to that armory and build the turret factory." He had voicecomm and was a good commander. After ten minutes I finally found the TF and builded it. Next he gave me some extra orders and I ended those fairly quickly. Then I just looked in the corridors and suddenly I got a boost of my armour to 290 and got a new gun. He sent me to auxilary generator.
I went over there and ran into my first enemy: a gorge. My first thought was like: "WTH is that!!!!!!!" I ran away untill another 'rine came and slayed him. The happy marine saw two skulks moving in and got killed in a matter of seconds. They ran to me, I pointed my gun pressed the LMB and closed my eyes out of fear. A few seconds later my clip was empty and three corpses laid in front of me. Thank god for the sentry and my HMG!
I was badly wounded and a flying mate approached me. He had a new gun. he pointed at me and restored my armour. Next I got 2 medpacks.
Later we were doing bad: Our comm went to the Kharaa. We lost a large portion of our base. I still had my precious HMG, but I lost my armour. Our new comm sent me and two standard 'rines to mess hall. we went in the corridor with an open door that was our destination.
A huge monster rushed us! Chaos was ruling while we got smashed.
The next respawns I saw another gorge. I thougt: "Another pig monster!". It spawned small skulks that killed me for the rest of the game.

My first Kharaa time was much worse! My complete team went gorge. I knew what i wanted to be: a behemot onos!
I selected the evolve button pressed it and read: "you need three hives."

The rest of the game I tried to build those hives at our starting location.

My first game was simply amazing. I had no idea where I was going (I was aliens), I had no idea what to do, and the marine resource bug was rampant (servers altering the .cfg). I think I got one kill and was hooked, me and a couple friends joined another server and went rines. The initial reaction to aliens was amazing, the scaryness was amazing.

So basically, my first expierience was amazing, a feeling quite difficult to put into words.

/edit hahaha, look all those amazings

Well, cant exactly remember my first game but..i could try . I think ns_eclipse was the first map i played.. I joined marines first, for some odd reason..

I remember there was a huge firefight going on, and people were humpin' the ammo, constantly.. commander yelled something about "why dont people go to my wp.." or something, so i volunteered to go, but as soon as i opened the door.. this HUGE alien came in.. two of them .

ns_bast, was prolly a good example of my mad newbie skills.. commander gave me brand new set of HA/HMG but what did i do.. i went out, and fade blinked next to me, and smashed me to pieces

Second time on ns_eclipse i wanted to be Alien, first i was running around as a skulk (first i didnt even know what it was) and everywhere i went, i was shot down . I got this huge urge to evolve myself to gorge, so i did.. i wanted to build (cuz it was so cool!), so i built OC under the hive in maintance!.. amazing.. . After few minutes i was flamed for being dumb . When I first started, it was a bunch of us playing on a lan. I didn't know there was a manual. I think my first game was on ns_nothing, starting at viaduct. I went gorge, because I thought the spit attack was cool. Someone told me to go and get resources. I asked how to build them, and he told me to push 'e'. So, I walked up to the built resource tower in viaduct and held down 'e' to get resources.

Another early game I played, we started at refinery (bast I think). I spent half an hour trying to find out where anything was. I had ran up the slanted elevator even, but I didn't realize that I had gotten anywhere, so I would just go back to the hive and start over again trying to find a place to go.

I just play mechanically instead of being absorbed by the atmosphere. I suppose those JP+HMG do really ruin it. For both sides. As all those cargo relocating and every single strategy that everyone does without any flexibility.

Agreed, I never thought I would see myself saying "I miss the days when we surrounded every node with turrets and used heavy armor HMGer's", but here I am...

lets hope 1.1 will put some fresher tactics.

im SICK of getting ejected from comm for doing HA + HMG instead of JP+HMG...

I went gorge (we had lots of black shooting thingies lots of res stuff and 2,5 hive thingies so that was fine).
Still someone moaned when we were 3 gorges on a full server.
I placed a resource tower thinking I need to stand ON the node. Of cource I got stuck and left the game.

Ahhh my first game, i only quickly glanced over the manual mind you. I had read a newbie guide on these forums though, and had only skipped over the Onos bit cos it just 'wasnt for noobs'. It was on eclipse and there was only me and 2 alien players they were telling me how to comm, i built like an IP an armoury then two giant tentacly rhinos ran at me an horned me to death i was like WTH lol.

Eclipse amazed me tbh, i was busy gawping at this great looking q3'esque map to do much else, i had never seen this type of mapping in HL. This was 3 weeks ago, i still cant comm very well. I was hooked, having not heard about NS at all and not doing much research into it before i played i was completely amazed by its professionalism.

Me > 'WTH!!' them > 'AAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHA'

Now i live to foil JP/HMG cheese greatly anticipating 1.1. go go go flayra 'n crew!
