Ok, a clear cockpit is a definate possibility, although the classic "add supports and leave the cockpit without glass" is also possible... I also have a preliminary of the pilot, Edward Crab, much more work is needed to finish (model credits: NS default marine, AvP marine) MUCH more work is needed to make him look better...
well, it seems people have lost interest, so i"ll add the backstory to the NCF Ferrin:
the NCF (Non-Commissioned Freighter) Ferrin was, originally, owned by Raven Shiping Ltd. based out of the city of Neko on Eden. due to severe budget limitations (Read the manual) when the TSA were forming the Fronteirsman, they had only 2 possible options: Stick with their aging fleet of obsolete, rusting, and underpowered "Dragonfly" landers or buy "off the shelf" or used Civillan vessels and retrofit them to their needs. By some act of genius, the TSA scientists decided, in order to keep the dropships flexable enough to accomplish the missions the Fronteirsman are asked to do, a Modular system was to be implemented. Using standard shipping crates as a base, a single dropship could function a myriad of purposes, from harsh desert, poisonous atmospheres, even cutting a hole into the hull and forcing a seal, coudl be done. After the infestation of the western continent of Eden (sucessfull contained by the Fronteirsman and erricated, no thanks to the Dragonfly Landers...) the TSA aquired Raven Shipping and assimilated their fleet of 50 modififed BM-1200s, one of wich is the Ferrin. The Ferrin, even though is considered a member of the Raven's fleet of vessels, is owned by Edward Crab, a co-owner of the former Raven Shipping. After a abbreivated training at Fronteirsman bootcamp, Edward crab was pressed into service, His marksmanship is surprisingly good considering his upbringing as a, well, scientific genius. His skill with his mind is only equalled with his skill behind the controls of the Ferrin.
It's a work in progress, but, what do you think so far?
really nice so far <!--emo&::marine::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/marine.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='marine.gif'><!--endemo-->
btw... think I didn't read anything what will this model be for.... For a map in progress or just "for fun" atm? <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Well, not for any specific map, people have asked for dropships in their maps for a while now, so i decided to make one, so a little of both. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
PS: Miniupdate
I've started the Skinmeshing of the model, for the time being, the cockpit will be closed and unmodeled to conserve polys. Otherwise, she's nearly done!
nooooooooo, dont use a pod, it'll look disgusting, like a minisub maybe u should try the osprey cockpit or sumthing or changing the apache a bit b4 u jump into sumthing like that
OMG, release that player model so we can use cs handed skins in ns <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
he isnt quite finished yet, his arms are still detached, and is it <i>really</i> that good? its just a hackjob of the NS marine and the AvP marine <!--emo&::marine::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/marine.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='marine.gif'><!--endemo-->
oh.... If <b>I</b> would do the skinning.... oh no.... let's skip this part <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
I'm afraid I'm too n00bish at skinning <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
btw: I'd make the pilot's helmet just like the Doom Marine's one:
Hmm... I got it! i'll start a skinning contest and let everyone have a crack at it m41a1 style! Although, a few bits will be skinned by myself. I have an update, my S.M.R. arrary is in place and skinned (SMR= Subspace Mass Reducer: by forcing a percentage of the ship into subspace, the mass effectively reduces, allowing faster movement without overstraining the engines) the skin is in reality a picture of a Plasmalamp, that cool glowey ball thingie in mad scientist's labs. The helmet was planned to be based off an avation flight helmet (the same one used for the Aliens dropship pilot's helmet.
First, the side view of the array, the cockpit was removed for a better view...

reminds me a bit of the chopper pilots "equipment" at the "Bundeswehr" (= German army) <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
Update: after going insane trying to make the AvP rolled up sleeves merge with the TSA standard armor, i had an idea, after cracking open the ultra cool halo remake, i thought about ripping his arms off and grafting them onto the TSA armor. Should i, or should i keep the rolled up sleeves?
i wouldn't worry too much about a gun or sumthing on the rine pilot, but if u wanted a door on the side of the dropship, u could have a rine with a big minigun or such.
I like it lots. Best model on the forum, in my opinion. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
