Gloom

<div class="IPBDescription">Anyone played it?</div> I'm speaking of the Quake 2 mod, Gloom.

Some of you might know of it, it's pretty similar to NS, and there was a big stink on the Gloom forums a while back before NS was released about how similar they were, and who was ripping off who, but that's not the point.

Has anyone played it? I've been playing it lately and I love it. It <i>is</i> similar to NS, but they're two vastly different styles and have no strategies in common at all. Anyway, if you have Q2 and you haven't played it, try it out, cause it's a lotta fun.

    Wasn't Gloom a Doom clone on the Amiga that made people feel sick?
  • Dirty_Harry_PotterDirty_Harry_Potter Join Date: 2002-11-21 Member: 9500Members
    yes it was(there was made 5, 1-5 and deluxe), but it's also a Quake 2 mod <a href='http://www.planetquake.com/rxn/gloom/' target='_blank'>[Homepage]</a>
    haven't played it though

    Yeah, i used to play Gloom. I had one problem with it, it was far too gloomy. There was +WAY+ too much darkness. Also, all the code, graphics and models were nowhere near the quality of NS's.

    im a gloom veteran....
    the darkness was ok.. it was much scarier than ns.. and playing the lil hatchlings was the coolest thing on that game <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> or the huge mechs of the h00mans

    Well the name <i>is</i> Gloom. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    The reason I think I'm liking it so much is because it reminds me of NS, but without all the crap in 1.04 (jetpacks).

    I've heard of it before. I hear the team that made Q2Gloom is working on the Q3 version.

    Hmm, is the community receptive to new people?

    Sadly the community is kinda anti-noob.

    Just try to learn the game, and don't go HT for your first few games. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    The models and configs Gloom comes with are not the greatest, so PM me if you need a decent config and autoexec or a model pak, I can email them to you. Read through the gloom.txt it comes with for a brief runthrough of the classes and then get into a server and play.

    Not only is that illegal, but I'm pretty sure a warezed version of Q2 won't be able to be patched, which means no gloom for you!

    There are people still playing gloom?

    Bizarre. I haven't played since 2000, back when it looked unlikely that another version would be released. Looks like they finally got 1.3 out the door.

    Gloom was good for what it was, but it never had the strategic complexity or level of teamplay that NS has. In fact, the commando and exterminator classes were prety much the epitome of the rambo ethic. Most games were ended by a commando sneaking behind enemy lines and c4-ing the alien base (given how insanely lethal spike-WOLs are, this was no mean feat).

    Of course, if you're looking to take a break from the NS mentality, this might be a selling point. While the commando wasn't much of a team player, the class was much fun to play.

    Personally I don't own Quake 2, and I still think its the weakest in the series. Mostly I like Quake 1 better for all the Lovecraft references.

    Yeah, gloom was like NS without the strategy. I mean, gloom encouraged peeps to go mech/exterm/commander and destroy the alien base without any teamwork. Typically, the team who won was the team who had the 1 best player which could infiltrate the enemy base and destroy it. NS is much better not just in the sense of better graphics and better engine, but that it encourages teamwork. It doesn't matter how freakin' good you are and how much equipment or how big a class you are, if you attack alone, you'll get get yours in the end. You can't destroy the entire enemy base by yourself. You just can't.

    Now the best player on the team is the comm for humans or the player which gives good direction and communication for either team. It is so much more rewarding to win the game knowing you helped rather than C4 going off and blowing up entire alien base in one fell swoop with which you might as well not have even played.

    Heh, all you people saying Gloom requires no teamwork don't play it much, do you? <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Sure, an XT or Commando can get behind the lines and get an egg or two, but they get either spiked or nabbed by a Guardian soon after and usually before. It takes a big push by the whole Marine team to take down all the eggs and finish off the Breeders quick.

    redeemed: smiley Gloom owns. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Don't play much? I played since the beginning of gloom, bud!

    Teamwork is just an illusion bad players give themselves so they can pat theirselves on the back and say they did a good job. Notice it is rarely the entire team in the enemy base when it is destroyed, but more like one or two people.

    NS is different. You're not going to find a lone onos destroying the enemy base, but most of the alien team (same for humans).

    No! Mirco$oft just wants to screw you, and then they release a "patch" as a new operating system to fix any problem in the code that didn't let you run Q2 when you could've searched the internet and found a free and easy way.

    Its called:
    WINDOWS 9x!!!

    <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
    heheh.

    Just by reading the descriptions of the aliens i think that its true that the entire marine team would be needed to defeat the arachnids.
