A few server questions

Hey folks, I just have a few questions regarding running an NS server. They weren't in the FAQs, so I'm assuming they're fair game.

1. Will their be a Linux server version of NS in beta 1.0?
I hate to ask this, as I'm sure there will be, but some other mods didn't have a Linux server version (Sven Co-op) until beta 2.0 or later. I just don't want to be suprised on release day without a Linux server.

2. What is the minimum reccomended maxplayer count for a server running NS?
I don't know how many people you have in each playtest game, but I did some figuring and if I ran an 8 player server, 4 players per team, and one of the marines is a commander, that leaves only 3 marines on active duty, s 4 aliens. Kinda measly. So I'm shooting for atleast 10 players. On my old TFC server I could pull off 12 players, but after that it started to strain my connection.

3. Will there be maps in beta 1.0 ideal for an 8-10 player server?
I think this has been asked before so feel free not to answer it. Most of the maps look really big and it would make it more difficult to play with only 4v4 or 5v5 on all huge maps.

Sorry if I'm repeating questions that have already been answered.

AFAIK NS is designed for about 16-20 Players, max. is 32
and AFAIK the maps are also designed for about 16-20 ppl.

Could a PT or a dev please confirm this?

Hm... while we're on this, does anyone know how many kbps a player connected to an NS server would require? My net connection is kinda scrawny, and I'll be running a webserver soon, too. So, the chances of me running an NS server on the same connection are kinda slim.

Some of this info (like the Linux version) is still up for grabs, but I'll answer what I can:

    1. Linux version may not release with Beta 1.0. However, it will be an extremely high priority, and will likely release within a few weeks of Beta 1. Definitely not months and months - we'd be killing ourselves on servers.

    2. As it stands right now in testing, 8 players is probably the minimum for extreme fun. 10-12 players is much better. 16-24 players is a blast. 32 players would be sheer insanity, at least for your poor commander! That's why maps have been scaled down a bit in general, to cater for slightly smaller games. It's hard to find servers that do more that 24 players in general anyway.

    3. There will definitely be maps that are fun for 8-10 players. I would say that majority of maps would be fun for that, in fact.

I've even really enjoyed the games we've had during playtesting that were very small (4 to 6 players). It just becomes a very different type of game when the player count is low. It definitely makes for a more tense and frightening experience, since it becomes more of a sneak-around, rather than frontal assaults. It gives you time to soak in the atmosphere. When NS finally does go public, try playing a small game like this at night with the sound turned up and the lights turned down.

I've even had people scare the bajeezus out of me on my own map.

Nice idea to make a new one for this type of discussion Flayra! Thanks guys for the feedback, it's greatly appreciated.

P.S. NS Team, please if you have time, don't forget about the Linux server version or else I can't run a server!
